That's cool, I got to see it in Tucson, AZ when it was going from California to Florida. The AWACS usaully flies just ahead of it. It must suck up alot of gas to stop so many times when going coast to coast. I'm sure the weight of the Shuttle doesn't allow it to carry full load of fuel not that it wouldn't be able to handle it but the runways and possibly the tires can't handle the weight.

COOL!!! Couple years back I saw it flying over my house. It was very low and must have been going in for a landing at a base near here. Not sure which one though.

Thanks for the Pic's

Now that's a sight you don't see everyday. Really cool!!!!!

I heard that it cost in excess of $1mill + to fly the Shuttle. Now there you go! I wonder if they charge them for additional luggage..........

I watched it take off at DFW airport back in around 1989-1990,. It stopped to refuel on it's way from Edwards AFB to the Cape. I was at a meeting at the Airport Hyatt, and we watched it from a window on the eighth floor.

It needs a REALLY long runway, and it used the whole length.

Bill - the local media reported it costs in excess of $1.8 mil to move it from coast to coast.

For that much money, you would think they could land a little closer to where they need to be.

I saw it today also - I was in Texas City and it was not directly overhead so I figure it was doing a fly over for the workers at NASA. It's an amazing site! You must have known it was coming to get such good shots.

They try for landings in Florida at Cape Canaveral. Unfortunately the weather is not always cooperative. The 2 auxilarly landing sites are White Sands, New Mexico and Edwards in California. I can't remember if they have ever landed at White Sands though. It may be a last ditch if the other 2 are unavailable.
