YOM License Plate? Wanted 1957, and 1958 CA

Postby cuyeda » Mon Jan 19, 2009 3:07 am

First a question about YOM (Year of Manufacture) CA plates, for the experts. Specifically these two years. Do CA trailer plates exist for 1957, 1958? What do they look like?

These pictures are referenced as car plates, but I have seen other YOM plates that are trailer designated plates.

Ok, so after my first posted question, I found my own answer!

Ans: Trailer plates are issued in two categories, Commercial, for which a fee is paid based on the weight of the trailer, and Private, officially known as "Non Weight Fee" trailers. Private Trailer plates started in 1956 with the 123 456 series, then shortly after moved to the AB 1234 numbering series, and later to 1AB1234 on the Golden State base. Commercial Trailer plates are issued in the UA through ZY numbering series.

So now my post is a "WANTED" post. Anyone have any YOM plates for 1957, 1958 CA trailer.

I've been looking for a 1959 plate for my '59 Mercury. That's a 1956 with a 59 sticker on it. Haven't found one yet. Gage has a '56 on his Dalton and it has two letters followed by four numbers (no sticker).

P.S. I think Gage told me he got his at the Pomona Swap Meet.

So then begs the question. If you do find a 1956 plate, but with a different year sticker, could you still use the plate in todays DMV system. Provided the plate was clear. I read somewhere if the plate was not clear you could not just change the year tabs (if any) to suit a different year vehicle. Once the plate is registered with a specific year tab, that is it. This statement may be for current registered plates, and not clear plates. I hope this makes sense.

The statement was for the metal tabs, it did not state anything about stickers.

The way I understand it. To use a 56 plate for lets say a 58 trailer, it has to have a 58 sticker on it and be a clear plate. The problem with the early trailer plates is that at one time (maybe now) is that motorcycle plates are two letters followed by four numbers. DMV will issue you new stickers which are PYR stickers that you stick to small plates that attach to the main plate. I'll try and get over to Gage's house and take a picture of his later today.

There is only one trailer plate there and it has a 1962 sticker on it. That won't work.

Yes, I am tracking two single plates, hence the sticker question. I can understand the metal tabs. Metal tabs don't deteriorate, but a 1956-62 sticker after so many years. If the plate is clear, I am hoping that I could sneak it through the system.

However, those plates are probably car plates, not trailer plates? The plates listed start with 3 letters, not numbers, ie. 123 456. Do I have this correct, car plates vs. trailer plates?

George, thanks I can just call him. He may know the answers. I am sure he would not appreciate a photo of his license plate on the internet. Appreciate the gesture.

I have a 1947 trailer plate that is on my teardrop. If you find a plate you will need the correct year sticker; but they also come up on ebay. you could pay up too $50-60 for it though. Just watch ebay and wait for the good deal. I have found rare motorcycle plates & stickers there.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

Lee,
Thanks for the input. The 1947 trailer plate is very identifiable having no stickers for that year. For 1948, 49, and 50 metal tabs were used with the 1947 plates.

Image

This is an extra plate that I own, and is for sale. I paid a pretty penny for it. If anyone is interested, I will sell it for the same amount I paid for it. I purchased another never issued 1947 plate that I will use on my trailer eventually. PM me if interested.

If interested this current Ebay ad will give you an idea what this year plate market price is.
Ebay Ad here, Buy it now $125 My plates are in a bit better condition, a couple small nail holes.

I just wish I was as clear on the 1956-62 plates and stickers.
