Jolene... would love to see the pics if you can find them. I was looking at a 1958 wooden runabout this morning on e-bay... and the old classic 'glass boats are cool too... Gage's Glasspar will be a stunner when he gets it done (or turns it over to me to restore (hahaha))...
Reality? What a concept!

Gage,

Maybe you can help me out. I don't get why these guys are wearing suits to go for a boat ride. Is this what everyone did back in the old days, put on a suit, and go down to the boat for a boat ride?

What happens to the guy that has to launch the boat? Did he take his pants off so they wouldn't get wet? Did he have a bathing "suit" underneath?

When did we get away from suits and switch to bathing suits? :? This stuff must be all way before my time! :rofl2:

Gage....I'll go by and see if I can get in touch with that guy this weekend....he has a 4 sale sign on it...appears to be about a 17' day cruiser, 2 tone black with a sort of lime green hull and deck...outboard...I really like the covered cockpit and slider windows...open back deck....

Jolene....Sea Kings were Montgomery Wards...I found a pair of wooden water skis that were Sea Kings that were by the side of the road with a "free" sign on them...I restored them and painted them up to match my Daisy Too boat....probably from the late 50's or so....

I have been involved with a fine group of old fiberglass boat restorers for some time now. I had planned to restore my 56 Glasspar Lido, but got fired up about teardrops, so sold the old boat to make room for more tears. If anyone is interested in the website and message board for "Classic Glass" restorers, click onto: www.Fiberglassics.com.

Just like our teardrop board, this group will answer any questions you have regarding old (50s and 60s) fiberglass gems. They have regular outings at various lakes, with dozens of boats showing up.

Roly, ex-fiberglassic guy, but now is a teardrop guy.

Doug,

What kind of maintenance must you do to keep your wood boat in good shape? I've always loved the way they look, but I'm not the most energetic guy.

Thanks,

-Sarge

P.s. I was temped to write, "What's it take to keep your woody going strong?" but I restrained myself :D

With automotive clear over the epoxy....all you got to do is wash and wax...no annual thing like with varnish....I also keep it in the garage and if it is outside it is covered up..unless it's on the water...the sun is incredibly tough on a wooden boat finish..maintenance on the engine isn't all that hard either...drain the water out of it, flush it out...put fuel stabilizer in the tank, change the oil regularly...it's a 4 stroke...check the bottom end to make sure you didn't get any water into it...as if it did and freezes hard it'll split the housing...not a problem here in Ca...but was in Denver...my first boat split the bottom end...had to scrounge a new one....PS I do have one to sell....not the one pictured above...same sort of look and design...only a 14 footer....bimini top, full water line cover, 1959 Mark 58A Mercury...all mohogany....on a 2001 Shorelander trailer....Doug

Doug,

For conversation sake, what would a
14 footer....bimini top, full water line cover, 1959 Mark 58A Mercury...all mohogany....on a 2001 Shorelander trailer
go for?
