What Can Be Done About a Pear Thief?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Todah Tear » Mon Jun 29, 2009 11:19 am

I bought 6 moth ball waffer hanger doo-hickies from Wally World and hung them up in the tree Thursday after work. I noticed Friday evening that the squirrels (2 of them now chomp on my pears) had broken off a limb of the tree. The limbs are already heavy from the weight of the pears. The squirrels jumping on them over-burdened the limb.

Anyway, I wondered if the mothball waffers worked. Well, yesterday, I noticed that practically all of the mothball waffer has disappeared. I think the sun is causing it to evaporate or something. That's why the squirrels probably didn't even notice the scent.

Now, it's time for plan B.

I have no solution... I have the same problem! Except... it's with our two apple trees, and the squirrels pull them off, take a bite, and throw them on the ground! ARGH!:x

My two DOGS can't keep them away. They should be ashamed of themselves.

It's a Benjamin 340 .177 air rifle. I've had it since I was a kid many moons ago.

I know! That's what miffs me. I have found pairs with one hunk out of them on the ground between my neighbor's house and mine. I just hope that they don't have any youngin's because 2 are terrible any more and we might have to call Jed Clampit and Granny.

FYI, I went to Pecto to get some Dog and Cat repellant (That's for another problem that I have with a cat that wants to use my flowerbed as a litterbox.)

At any rate, I looked for some Squirrel repellant as well, but they didn't have any on the shelf. A friend was shuffling through the discount shelf while I was at check-out and found some Squirrel and Racoon repellant spray. I don't know if they are planning on discontinueing it, but for $4 I was willing to get it. The lady said that, with my receipt, I could get my money back if either of the products didn't work.

You might visit your local Petco and see if they have any left on their shelves.

Why not pick the pears just before they ripen and let them ripen in your window? After that you can blast away
