What is this thing?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

What is this thing?

My husband found this thing in our woods. It looks like a folding pocket knife but has some kind of thick pick thing instead of a blade. No markings so I couldn't Google it. Any ideas?

it is a sailor's rigging knife used to splice ropes. The point is to separate strands of the rope to do the splice. The metal ring is for a lanyard so it is not lost overboard.

I've never seen one with out a blade, that usually opens to the opposite end.

My Grandfather, being of farming pioneer stock, told me as a little boy, that the spike was for digging things out of horses hooves. Impressive! Doing the heroic thing to help your animals. Some years later when I joined the Boy Scouts I discovered I'd been had & the rope splicing use was far less romantic.
He is no longer with us, but half a century later I still love that man for his sense of humour, patience & the ton of stuff he taught me without really 'teaching'.
Finding a treasure like that in the woods is a usefull find. Good spotting!
