I've used Kaspersky at work for a couple of years now and it's a good program....but, I don't think there is a program made that can detect what Warpony had. Even Kaspersky didn't catch that same trojan virus. Had to pay IT professional to come in and fix it.

I have Norton Antivirus at home and it has caught everything trying to invade my laptop. Am very pleased with it so far.

You may still want to run Malwarebytes or something similar. No matter what you think of any antivirus program, it will NOT catch everything. I run a different antivirus program than my normal one every once in a while to check and almost always find something that my AVG has missed.

Just a thought and something to keep in mind.

Hi Kerry :) - I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes just for kicks last night and it found 33 items after a scan. I was impressed! But does it run in the background all the time or do I need to perform a scan manually once in awhile?

I had the same thing about a year ago, exactly a year ago, it's a rogue antivirus, kept popping up saying I had x number of viruses and to download their antivirus for X dollars, it also loaded a couple of links on my main page. I changed back to my old computer and bought new virus software, that didn't do it, downloaded malwarebytes, burned it to disc and it took care of it right away. Have been manually updating and running a scan about once a week since, and have caught a couple more rogue antivirus programs.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

A WORD OF ADVICE - TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT AS YOU WILL!!

Get your computer clean (fresh install or however) and once you are sure that it is clean - use an imaging software (Like TrueImage or Ghost) to make an image of your HD with the OS and your programs installed. You should be able to burn it to DVD (or cds) and make it bootable. You can redo this every once in a while to keep it up to date. If you get a bad infection of some sort, then just restore the image and you will only have lost anything since the last time you created the image.

Another point here also. If you go a fresh install of your OS then you can partion the HD and keep all of your files seperate from your OS and other programs. You can also do this by installing an additional HD which is even better than a partioned single drive.

My recommendation is the (now) free microsoft security essentials.

I too prefer linux in alot of ways but I have a couple no-go issues with it.

1. Netflix streaming is not supported by any operating system except for OSX and Windows.

2. My work webmail (and most government websites for that matter) requires Active X and IE.

3. No native chat programs like AIM, MSN, etc... you have to use a non-native tool such as pidgin. However... google chat may resolve this, at least for me with it's web based chat, I haven't tried yet.

But Ubuntu rocks and I do use it full time on at least one computer at all times.
