Boy you missed half of the FORD action. Lot of big dollars out there today. Can't wait for tomorrow to come when the High Rollers show up with the unlimited bank accounts and the prime stock rolls up on the auction block.

As a side note. Today I just ran accross a running 390 with a C6 trans attached for only $150. Do believe I'll be getting it tomorrow. Time to pull the 312 out of the '56.

Have a good day.

Great find, Gage.
Do you suppose you'll pick up any fuel mileage with the new combo?

Gage, What are you going to do with the 312 after you take it out?

If it is a 56 motor I would be interested in it if you decide to sale.

I'm thinkin' the answer to that one would be most likely not. A 390 is one hell of a motor but easy on gas it ain't. It'll pull stumps but it won't pass many gas stations. Now if you put some airplane gears in the back of that truck it might not do too bad.

I dunno either, I do know my 67 mustang with a 390 got 17mpg on the highway while my Dad's truck with camper got 6-8 mpg highway.
I recall Gage mentioning how low his mileage was with the 312 in the 56, juust can't remember what the actual number was, I believe it was less than 10mpg though. With that said, it is possible the 390 "might" get better mileage.

My 312 gets about 12 miles per gallon if I drive 55-60; and drops to about 9-10 after that. Unfortunately for me I'm a lead foot and like to drive about 75-80. 8)

with a 390 Gage, you might consier putting some taller gears in the rear...get better milage with possibly better all round performance...

Don't get me wrong, I have always believed and proven that more motor will net you better fuel economy particularly in a lighter vehicle (doesn't always work). But I've had a few 390's that weren't gentle on the wallet. (Wish I had them now.) You could be right tho, if he's doing that bad with the 312 the 390 might just make it seem like an econo box with some $hit!

PS--- I'd do it anyway :EXP :EXP :EXP :EXP :EXP

Kevin, Lee & Rich

Actually my 312 is really a highly modified 292 and yes it is a '56. It's been over bored for 312 pistons (but still has a 292 stroke), has 312 heads with large ports and valves. Has a ground cam and a 4 barrel Holly carb sitting on a Edelbrock intake manifold. The rear end has 293 gears for the highway. But like that, I only get about 9 mpg (when towing the tear) if I'm lucky and with only a 12 gal. tank, it does stop at a lot of gas stations. It's already been promised to a good friend who wants to put it in his '55 merc. (he help'd me build the motor). Like the 352 that I've got in the wagon, I'll keep the 390 pretty stock, only adding a different 4 barrel manifold and a 2 barrel Holly and a reducer spacer block and do some clean up work inside the engine(it's what I did to the 352). With the 352, I average 14 mpg towing the teardrop (1400+lbs). The wagon also has 293 gears in the rear end. Who knows, I just may put the 390 in the wagon and then put the 352 in the truck. Mainly because the C6 is going in the wagon. Oh, so many possibilities.

Have a good day.
