composting toilet.... who uses them?

Postby Wimperdink » Tue Dec 14, 2010 12:32 am

In a dream to create my debt free world, I'm considering building my own place on some acreage.... A big expense of building from scratch is sewer/septic.... In my area a septic rated for 3 bedroom costs between 6,000 and 10,000 depending on the land and how much rock there is in the clay/soil.... Thats a fair chunk of change.

Do any of you use composting toilets and how would you rate them versus a normal system. Yes a regular toilet is very clean and mostly maintenance free system. My septic takes about 6 - 8 years before needing pumped and thats only 150 - 180 bucks to get it done. Not a big deal at all. Is the added chore of maintaining a composting toilet worth the savings of having to put in a septic? I realize the resale value of the land and home would be much higher having a normal system but thats also $10,000 I'd like to save.

Sorry green peacer's but my only desire to do something green is to save $. I could care less about having the compost to put around trees and flowerbeds... I'm just curious if they are more of a pain in the butt than their worth in savings?

Oh my! In my search on the internet I came across this you tube video... I'm not sure if this is really disturbing or incredibly funny.

And washing hands in a fire hydrant after saving the water.

do the maintenence hassles outweigh the savings of having one of those installed vs a septic? I'm guessing the system won't oulast a septic but even if it had to be replaced every 10 years it should come out even in the long run.
