Doug, It accually handles pretty well. The turning radius is a bit large though. I really opened her up this afternoon! A wopping 47 miles per hour!!! I might have gotten to 50-55 but I am still driving with out brakes.

I can't believe how smooth the engine runs. Like a swiss watch. After all the hair pulling such a simple thing was wrong.

Armstrong steering to boot huh? also...is it cuz there are no shoes on the brakes...or just no peddle?...and have you tried out 4wd? and it's kind of amazing to think that we won a World War using vehicles like this at the time...primitive by todays standards...but it was the most reliable...fixable durable thing that the military had....practically bullet proof...and you own one of them...cool  ! just my opinion....Doug

The master cylinder is dry. I have to remove the floor boards to get to it. I figured get it moving first then worry about stoping it.
Supposedly it had a new brake system installed about 17 years ago; before it was put in the barn. If I'm lucky the mice where too big to fit in those lines.

Lee, I know this will sound a bit farfetched
I had a 51 Chevy PU with the brake master under the floor, it had a leak in the brake system so until I was able to repair it, I used to fill the master cylinder then press the brake pedal to the floor and slide my foot off the side of the pedal allowing it to snap back. After repeating this several times it would bleed the air out of the system enough produce a firm pedal. Might be worth trying on the Dodge.
;) :worship:

Talk about getting the looks. Everywhere I went in town today I got mobbed. Everone wants to now what it is or say how cool it is. When I tell them it is a 1942 they can't believe it.

When I was a teenager my Dad had a six wheel drive Diamon-T tank retriever and a millitary Duck. The tank retriever never had brakes the whole time we had it. It was so low geared you didn't really need them.

It just occured to me.

The name of this thread and what happened afterwards contradict themselves. As far as getting the beast to run, impatience is what paid off.

Covelo Connection

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Mon Jan 30, 2006 12:40 pm

Dear Lee,

You have a right to be elated about your recent aquistion. :R

I remember you telling me about the vehicle (Covelo came up as a topic) that had been hidden away at the Early Bird Gathering. So glad you were able to persuade him to relinquish it. Have a Great time restoring it.

Off Topic: How about the 16 yr. old cutie from Willits that's going on to American Idol. Was she cute or what? Do you know her? Hope she does well.

Will you be attending the IRG? If so, we'll have to catch up around the campfire.
