Roof Rack Carrier Project

Postby PresTx82 » Sun Mar 05, 2006 3:32 pm

I've been wanting to convert this military "rocket container" into a roof rack carrier for storage (e.g., fishing poles, camping stuff) for some time, but I've been looking for some kind of "fastener" that I could purchase, and permenantly bolt/fasten it to the bottom of the container, and then attach it to the roof rack of my Jeep. The demensions are 54" long, 15" wide and 12" high. The container is made of heavy metal.

I could strap it down, but am afraid it'll come off during my travels and nail the vehicle behind me.

Can anyone point me into the right direction for "fasteners/brackets" of this sort?

If you have a round load bar...Image try minerallac conduit hangers. Get them at a "real" electrical supply house. I don't think I've seen them at the big boxes..I would substitute the regular nut with a ny-loc nut..plenty strong!

I use a squared end u-bolt to attach my tent carrier to my bars. It gives a more solid mount.

Maybe a toilet tank mounting kit or two from the hardware store, It will include rubber washers for under the bolt head to keep leaks out?

Cheers,

Virtually all of these OEM racks are made to accept the latching mechanisms for Thule and Yakima rooftop boxes...you might wanna check with them for those parts...
