Big Black Bag

Postby Guy » Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:56 pm

Dear Gage,

You are right. You saw my little black bag, when I visited with Tanya and yourself. My little holds my papers, computer, and electronics stuff. Len is referring to my BIG black bag which holds my medications.

:D

Guy

Personally, I don't think you have to give up the steak OR the venison chili.

Check the size of the steak. Most of the time, the issue has more to do with those 20 ounce honkers that some feel must be consumed in a single setting that cause the problem. You could handle six ounces without another trip to the ICU.

Venison is good lean meat but double check to make sure the sodium content of the other ingredients don't cause you to jump into heart failure again. I believe I could handle some chest pains but I always feel so bad for those fellas that come in struggling for every breath, having to sleep sitting up and drowning in their own fluids. Sounds like an AWFUL way to try to survive.

Portion control is the key here. One of my patients finally figured out that if the portion was large enough to cover his "privates" when naked, it was too big a portion (maybe he had big "privates"; I never saw them). If the portion was small enough that he'd get arrested for indecent exposure, it was the right size to consume.

Make sense?

"Private" portions

Postby Guy » Fri Mar 03, 2006 11:37 am

Dear Gail,

If I went the "private parts" portion control route, I would STARVE.

Sounds like something that I've been going through for almost a year now and the darn doctors that I've been seeing don't have a clue as to what is going on. I can only get about 4 hours sleep at a time before I start drowning. And I don't always have to be laying down.

Have a good day.

Gail-

Just curious & for future reference:

I use sea salt in my venison chili, does it have the same high sodium content of conventional table salt?

I'd hate to see my bud Guy holding his chest after eating my chili!

OBTW: How about anchovies? They are salty little buggers, I happen to know of a certain person who likes SCADS of 'em in his Ceasar salad...

Cheers,

What about Jack?

Postby Guy » Sat Mar 04, 2006 11:56 am

Dear Coop,

If you remember it was Jack who was holding his chest all night and I had to stay up with him.

Good Anchovies do not have a lot of salt on them. You have to eat the right ones.

Ironic isn't it? Maybe Jack should have the little/big black bag!

Let's see what Gail says about those anchovies!

Anchovies, canned in oil - 5 of those little stinkers have 700+ milligrams (mgs.) of sodium.

If you can get them fresh (uncanned, unprocessed), they have less than 100 milligrams per 3 ounce serving. It's the sodium added during processing that's the culprit for those with hypertension, congestive heart failure, etc.

For guidance, most heart failure patients are limited to about 2000 milligrams (2 grams) of sodium a day so you're nearing half your sodium allowance with this serving.

And yes, sea salt had the same sodium content of "regular" salt (most of which is mined).
