Informative graphic on gasoline prices...

I found this graphic to be very informative about where our gasoline comes from, what effects prices, and the history of gas prices...

I couldn't believe it so I poked at it a bit.

I guess we don't have it so bad. Still I factor in the cost of fuel into my errands to decide whether to go or not.

Ideally, gasoline taxes should be enough to cover building and maintenance of roadways. At least here in Texas, they don't cover that, and they won't raise gasoline taxes, so instead, tollways are popping up all over the major cities. Somehow, Texans are fine with some of us having to spend 100 bucks a month on tolls, rather than everyone paying 2-cents more for a gallon of gasoline.

One of the factors however is that the distances in the US tend to be greater and the public transportation poor or non existent. There used to be a trolly (light rail) line running through Metamora Ohio and if you know where to look you can still see the right of way and the old station and transformer building. GM deliberately drove the trolleys out of business.
I would dearly love to have a Subaru with the six speed transmission and the diesel engine or the one they have been working on that uses a fuel cell. There is also new battery technology and new solar technology coming that could be competitive in energy density.
One of the problems is that most road damage is caused by trucks and while they pay more in taxes it come no where close to paying for that damage. When I see many trucks I keep thinking most of that particularly long haul should be on trains, and at one time trolly's provided much of the transportation to outlying areas with very little need for local trucking/dlivery.
