Another reason why moose and cars don't mix

I was in Anchorage this week and checked the winter's moose hit count. 199 hits since June in AK. That's a bunch of bent up Toyota's!

Having done some work up in Maine - the locals say - "If you hit a moose - your dead" Looks like this one was lucky.

That's really a sad story. I'm glad the driver was OK, but I just wish the moose would have been OK too. I love animals and hate to see things like this.

A few year ago I drove from Vegas to Columbus Ohio and I was stunned at the number of dead deer along the roadways. It really bothered me to see all of them. Of course I still cry when I watch Bambi.

The driver was fortunate in this case.

In my neck of the woods there are a lot of moose and usually the occupants of the vehicles do not fair well. When a car hits a deer, the front of the car takes most of the body impact of the deer. When a car hits a moose, the front end hits the legs of the moose which then starts sliding along the hood and through the windshield.

I've had a few friends and family have this happen to them and they are lucky to be alive, but they have had reconstructive surgery and lots of rehab to be able to function again.

I hope you understand that I'm not downplaying the human tragedy of these accidents. The danger is real and the outcome often tragic. Out here in the Southwest we are more likely to have cattle in the road. It's never a good outcome. Still, I hate to see it.

I apologize if I seemed insensitive to that moose. Not joking, but I just understood that MY joke may have seemed kind of crude.

I love mooses. Little flying squirrels TOO!

I understand, I know that's not what you meant. And I hope that you don't think that I was downplaying the animal tragedy as well. I am a huge fan of wildlife of any kind and it breaks my heart to see and hear of accidents with animals.

While living in Maryland, my family and I had several encounters with deer. On one occasion, my son-in-law was driving to my house at 4AM when he heard a bump, so he stopped. He had no flashlight, so he walked around the car feeling as he went until he felt a small dent in the curb side door. He turned around and drove slowly the way he came and found a dead deer that had run into the side of the car. It was Jan, and very cold, so the next morning, we dressed our some fine venison for the freezer. My daughter hit one one night, and managed to get it into her trunk. We ate that one too.

My ex-wife had one jump off an embankment and hit her windshield, decapitating the deer. The car was totaled. After she was checked out by the paramedics, and finally got home, she wanted me to go back and get it. I declined. Later I learned that one of the firemen who came to the scene found it and took it home.

Some may think it discusting to eat what they'd call "road kill", but if they knew how their steak came to be in the package, they probably wouldn't eat that either. If I kill it or catch it, I eat it.
