How do you keep you TT from wandering off?

Postby kymoonshine » Sun Mar 03, 2013 11:56 pm

I am almost finished with my Breadbox build...it's small and would be so easy to steal..even with a tongue lock it's so light someone could just use the safety chains and chain it to a bumper or hitch and drive off with it...on my Airstream I have dual wheels so I use wheel locks...I would run a cable through the wheels and lock it but I have solid wheels....maybe a Denver Boot style wheel lock? what do you guys do when you leave the TT in a campground for day trips? I'm not really concerned at home because it stays in garage with alarm system...I searched the forum but really didn't see anything...maybe I missed a useful thread?....thanks for any tips...

The tongues on both of my tears have a removable section attached to the hitch. When I leave the TD unattended, I simply slip the tongue into the car trunk, and I doubt that anyone has a similar tongue/hitch set-up. (I hope)

The tongue on mine telescopes back under the trailer making it too short to to hook up to a vehicle.
It is locked into place when in camp & doubles as a safeguard from barking your shins in the dark

The tongue on ours is long enough and has a Bulldog hitch with a Da-bull lock and a tongue weight that would make pulling it with out hooking up very difficult This is about as secure as you can make it. But this does not help you. In essence anything you can get a bolt cutter on is toast and a wheel lock is useless unless it covers the lug nuts preventing taking off the wheel.
One of these is basically useless.

One of these follows the 'cover the lug nuts' but is vulnerable to bolt cutters.

This follows the probable best design but is still vulnerable to being cut off with a cutter/angel grinder

Reasonable price and covers a lug nut or two but still vulnerable.

You are never going to be able to stop a determined thief with proper tools and time...but usually (I hope) people in the campground would notice someone hacking or grinding security devices off someones trailer...I really only install such items to deter theft...maybe they will move on and not deal with the hassle..but if they are really determined to steal your stuff...they will....I don't know if I could get my insurance company to even cover this thing...it has no title..built on antique utility trailer...so if it was stolen I would be out a lot of time and money spent :( I was just wondering if anyone had any "clever" ideas I had not thought of....

kymoonshine is right. Your best bet is other campers noticing. Make friends when you pick a site.

Don't obsess or you won't enjoy the camping.

I park in in the garage when home and when I'm at the campground I close the locking lever on the coupler and put a padlock in it. If someone REALLY wanted to steal it, it wouldn't be too hard.

We have the "security detail." When we go camping, we take at least one of our dogs, if not all three. Cocoa the Pitt Bull weighs 85 pounds, and is pretty aggressive and territorial with adults, but is a big baby with kids. Molly the Great Pyrenees weight 130 pounds, and loves most people, but does get unfriendly with people she thinks have bad intent. Blizzard the Great Pyrenees is 105 pounds, and he's still mostly puppy (He's going to be HUGE!) but he mostly follows Molly's lead. If Molly barks and acts aggressive, he joins in. We keep the dogs on cable runs strung from the trees. with 300 pounds of dog guarding the camp, nobody but a group of friendly 8 year olds can get near.
Laurie originally said we could clip leads to the tongue, but I'm afraid between the three of them they could pull the camper down the road.

I lock my tongue and the doors when I leave. That is it. My trailers are very unique and I have hundreds of pictures of them. If they should disappear I have a chance of finding them.
It makes for a slightly bigger needle in a camping haystack.
