Things that don't fit anywhere else...

I Blame Dean!!!

So here I was a month ago with no "iron" Now I have 12" and 10" Lodge Logic. That is bad enough but look what happened this morning when I went to an Estate Sale.

Image

Yeah I gathered a little more iron.
They are all Griswold except for the DO and the large skillet to the lower right
That skillet is WagnerWare
Image

The DO is a 12" Deep
Image

I have never heard of WagnerWare but it looked interesting with the lip on the bottom.
The DO, I did need a deep one

All of this for $100, is the good or just market prices.

Apparently they have more that could come up tomorrow but there were no Indians. The owner knew what he had but he was not there so I bargained down $11!!

Thanks Dean.

Don't fight Dennis... Embrace it, it's good!!!
That ring on the bottom of the Wagner is what they call a heat ring and Wagners are right up there with the Griswolds.
Good find!!!
Thanks for sharing.
Bring some of that iron to Mendo and prepare for a feast!
I'll be doing a big prime rib to share. :R
Oh Yaa... Gotta do that Hawaiian Braided Bread again too.
Oh... Gotta do some kind of cobbler for dessert as well. :R
Hey... My kids will be with me, Maybe I can get them to do the DO ice cream to go with the cobbler.

The Griswolds are #3 #5 and four #6. Some of those will find another home in time. I have a friend who works part time in an antique store and also does e-bay. Wagner is not marked on the handle but has 8x on the bottom.

If my roast pork goes well tomorrow, I will share another one at Mendo.
Right now I have to search for a recipe that used Decadent Chocolate Cake mix. It is in one of th DO sets I have printed.

Believe me--I'm being pulled by the attraction.

I just can't afford another obsession now--even an inexpensive one like DO cooking.

Not to worry Ira,

You can COMBINE your obsessions. Tomorrow morning I'll fire up the smoker with brisket and pork shoulder. Then I'll make Mexican corn bread and peach cobbler in the DOs! See, it's not another obsession, it's the extension of an existing one. You can even use all the same fire making equipment.

See, now you don't have any excuse.

It's OK Dennis, my wife blames Dean too. Before IRG, I owned no iron. Afterwards, I have every size Lodge DO except for the 5in which has a Camp Chef substituting for it (till I get a Lodge). I will have a complete collection.

I probably won't go as far as Dean and get anything larger. I have yet to use the 16in oven.

Dean.

O guru of all things cast iron.

I found a Wagner Ware 8" skillet in a DAV thrift shop a couple of days ago. It did not have the heat ring. I'm just curious what that might mean. Does that make it older, or a less expensive line of cook ware, what? I have never found a good explanation for why some have the ring and some don't.

Oh, and by the way Dean, I did not catch this obsession from you, but you just reminded me of my childhood and how good the food was that my mom cooked in cast iron. I managed to get my hands on some of mom's cast iron from family members who had gotten it when she broke up housekeeping. Well, then I got my first DO, now there is no going back. I am embracing the obsession.

I also have my grandmother's HUGE iron pot. I think she may have done laundry in it. And the waffle iron from ebay............... :? :? :?

I had my first shot at seasoning yesterday with the new deep DO and cornbread thing I was given. Generally it went okay, well it was okay once I turned off all the smoke alarms, pointed a floor fan at the kitchen and turned on two ceiling fans. Naturally seasoning means burning or almost burning, both of which create smoke, smoke my 50 yr stove exhaust fan could not deal with. :?
I finally convinced the dogs to go through the smoke and out the back door where we stayed for the next hour.
The DO and lid barely fit on the stove shelf and I did not notice the DO was tilted a bit. Now I have a nice looking DO with a bald spot where the oil migrated to other side as it was heating.
I can fix that later but I now have crud in the oven to clean up.
My oven has a self cleaning feature, start the SC and let it go for 3-5 hours. They do warn you to be sure the place is well ventilated.. duh.

Has anyone seasoned a DO while the stove was in Self Clean mode?

dmb,
Some people use the self cleaning mode of the oven to burn all the seasoning, if it had gone bad, or wax off to start over.
Too hot for seasoning, since the point is too burn everything off the oven it will do the same for the dutch oven.
Makes sense once you think about it.
