Cheap Dual Sport Motorcycle

Postby Q » Sun Sep 30, 2007 9:43 am

I've been wanting a dual sport for exploring the back country when out camping, running to the store, etc.. Needed to be licensed, go at least 60 mph, be reliable, and cheap. Found a new 200cc Lifan (largest maker of motorcycle engines in China) delivered for under $1400. I've put 1000 km on it so far and really like it. Three of my friends have since bought the same model.

$1400, wow! Even if it was complete junk that is cheap enough to try. I just dropped $4000 on a used Suzuki DR400. Are those Ohlin forks or just gold anodized tubes?

Ive read posts on other forums that those were good for the money bikes. The only complaints I remember is that they werent assembled well and this guy just went through the bike to make sure everything was tight and secure before he rode it. He has reported long trips on it and I believe he even ran it in a hare scramble.
Here is mine, it is a plated Yam WR450

Will that fit a short rider?

Postby ccdell » Sun Sep 30, 2007 11:02 pm

Wow. That looks like what I have been looking for also. Would that model fit a shorter rider? The few off road bikes I have looked at were to tall for me.

when I was a kid my cousin and I couldn't afford dirt bikes, so we would buy old small street bikes and put on taller shocks, plastic fenders and knoby tires. It worked great, I have done this with a few differant models.... just a thought for anyone else thinking to save some money...

I was curious about your bike, so I did a google. I found this info on a bike site that might be of some help...

"The bike is only good for about 45mph, maybe 50mph or so. So I bought a 44T rear sprocket to replace the stock 56T one, I got the new rear sprocket for only $9.95 plus $5.00 shipping. It is a honda SL/XL/XR standard bolt-pattern. The top speed is now 65+mph and actually accelerates better without having the gearing feel so close."

by all accounts it looks like a really good buy. I'd like to know the "real" gas mileage. the 102mpg claimed by the manufacturer seems a bit exaggerated.

My son bought the GRX 200 bike from Lifan, and is pretty happy with it.
I like it too.
It is light, easy to handle, comfortable, and has plenty of power.

It was geared low, plenty of power, but 50 or so was comfortable top speed.
He changed the rear sprocket, and rejetted the carb.
It will run 70 now.
That said, it isn't a 900 pound road bike...
Great for town driving and short trips.

Factory, he got around a hundred miles a gallon, after modifications, he's getting 86mpg.

Not a bad deal for $1300...

Rob

Is this motorcycle a knockoff of another bike? I'm just wondering.

I read somewhere that the engine was a honda design that was never put into production and bought by them... but I really don't know. I have read cautions that "they" are being copied and to beware of not getting the real thing...

Morning everyone...here is a link to a thread on the GY200. I haven't read the entire thread yet, but sounds like a good deal for the price.

I can't say I read all 13 pages, but from jumping around on it you should put some Locktite on the bolts...other than that he seemed pretty happy.

My favorite bike using the Lifan engine is this one . It comes in 3 boxes , has some options and can be registered . It just plain sounds good too . There are videos on the site .

Hey DJ , cool lookin ride!

What size is the motor? how much does it weigh? What is the top speed with a 200 pounder on it? What kinda transmission is in it? What kinda braking system? MORE INFO PLEASEEEEEEE!!! :R :R
I went to the site & there is not alot of info there. I did see that he may take a trade for a bike , so I offered to trade a 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo . I'm waiting for a reply. He is only about 1 1/2 hours from me. Keeping my fingers crossed.
