I used to race Mountain Bikes in Germany. I actually broke my back and cracked a hip in 97 in a race. I haven’t ridden but maybe a dozen times since. But I would like to start again…I have a lot of down time here in Iraq, and there is a lot of room to ride inside the wall.

(and I could use to loose some weight ;-)

So I thought I’d ask… anyone have an older mountain bike they don’t ride? Now not that I’m being particular, but I am not really wanting a Walmart Huffy…

I raced Cannondales, and I would want something of that quality…anything that is perhaps out dated. 10 years old maybe or not going to ever be ridden again in the back of your garage?

OH frame size SMALL or 13" give or take...

How would the shipping work for that?? I am sure I am shipping to a FPO(it was the FPO when I was in the Marines...you guys may do it differently), but do they allow that big of packages? We had a size limit when I was in the Gulf.

I would just ship you one of my extras but I am 6'5" and run a 21" frame.

Any particulars on the groupos?

well, I'm 5'6" (used to be 5'7") with a 28" inseam.... but I'm nearly as wide in the shoulder as I am tall...

and I am at an APO, and anything that can be mailed through the postoffice in the us I can get for the shipping it cost from the sender to NY city.... kinda cool of the Military to do that for us... :thumbsup:

I have a made in the U.S.A. Skykomish 21 speed Marble Point. I paid $200 for it at Costco about 10 years ago. It's just like new since Mountain Bike handle bars are too hard on my shoulders so I ride a bike that I'm able to adjust the handle bars for my comfort. I'm about your height. Shipping would be a big concern. :thinking:

I suppose it is easier to mail big packages to a APO...with the FPO it had to go to a ship.

hey, got some pelvis issue too, enjoy riding lots, as its almost impossible for us to practice high impact sport; running....

for your gabarit we would suggest a 15 or 16 inch frame, try getting a alumuniun frame as they are cheap to buy now and much ligther than steel. get anybrand doesnt matter thet much, important is for you to be comfy on it , that mean adjusting brake levers, stem angle, and especially a seat you will like.

maybe you should look on craiglist of your area,baghdad :lol:

try getting a full suspension, has it will absorb the terrain better, but are heavier and more hard to pedal. but mostly wear a lid and gloves, their essential for your future and take it easy.

oh yeah, if you can upgrade to real fat tire, width wise, they are really great satbility wise aand against puncture.

if the ridinng doesnt get you going the going will get you riding.

I don't have a mtb (sorry I'm a roadie) but as far as shipping is concerned, take it to an LBS, tell 'em you are sending it to a soldier in Iraq, & I bet they will pack it for you at no charge.

Packing a bike for shipping is a bit of an art.

This is what I have I have learned from sending bikes overseas....... It's expensive. Germany is outragous in it's shipping costs. I do a lot of buying of European cycling equipment and I refuse to pay what Germany demands for shipping.
But as a US soldier, do you get a deal? That's important....... It seems to me you should........

What type of riding are you going to do? What we have done back here in the states is to convert over to single speed on our mtb's....... It's a simplier riding style . Many benefits from it.

And great ss mtb bikes can be had for about $500. New. Quality bikes.
