What are you doing to protect yourself against inflation?

Postby mikeschn » Wed Mar 26, 2008 3:29 am

Inflation is spiraling out of control thanks to all the dollars that Bernanke is pumping into the system.

And I suspect before it's all over, we will have ended up with a nasty case of Stagnant Economic Growth as well as nasty inflation (some even think we will end up with hyper-inflation).

I'm curious to hear what you guys are doing to protect yourself against inflation. Are you stocking up your food pantry at yesterday's prices? Are you buying gold so that your savings account keeps up with the inflation? Are you planning on a more frugal car so you don't have to buy as much gas?

Mike...

P.S. And last but not least, do you think our fiat system is at risk, and do you think we will see implementation of the Amero?

Being the profound economist that I am and amassing all of the extensive research I've done on the economy . . .

I simply epoxied my valve stem shut. They'll have a hard time inflating me

Good question Mike, I'll be interested in responses. Should make an informative and well timed thread.

Got the small Hyundai, a Scion, and my ol' Nissan truck - can't do much about the cars (a hybrid maybe?) 'cept drive them less.

I'm going camping with my teardrop and let every one else worry about it. I'm retired and my pension is larger than my SS and I have no house payment. How's that saying go? Who, me worry.

:o I think I will epoxy my valve stem shut too. I really like that one. We will probably go the way of the Euro and do the Amero. That should cause enough confusion to keep things level for a while.

I have been driving a Honda Civic Hybrid for the last 4 years, my house and all major bills are paid off and I work for a company that is actively hiring right now (network security is a big deal right now).

I also spend much less than I make and I save a lot of it. They say a lot about the current spending and saving habits of Americans. Reverse all of what they say and that's me.

:)

I've been adjusting to the new 'George Bush Dollar' right along . . . . as it quickly devalued from a buck to less than 50 cents by driving only 4 cylinder vehicles - If it don't get 30 MPH minimum, I ain't interested

I also converted to solar domestic water heating last year. We get 100% of our hot water basically for free now about 9 months of the year and even during the winter, the solar preheats the water in the tanks so much that we only use a minimum of electricity to bring it up to full hot

One more year and I'm certain we'll see some big changes in the economy. Whether the Democrats or the Republicans win the White House, at least we'll have someone who doesn't have his IQ tattooed inside his hatband again for a change . . . . I can't wait!

I know installations can vary. But does anyone have a ballpark figure on the cost of a tank-less water system.

I bought a piece of commercial property for my studio that's 2 miles from my house.

- I save about an 1-1.5 hr. a day in commute time, that is now billable instead of wasted in traffic
- I save a LOT of money on gas.
- Less wear and tear on the vehicle.
- I eat lunch at home every day instead of eating out.
- The commercial property has been appreciating while residential has been plummeting.
- I get to spend more time with my family, and that makes me happier and more productive.

Other than that, every time the wallet comes out, I ask myself, "do I really NEED this?". If the answer is no, the wallet goes back.
