Exercize supporters

Postby fireaunt » Tue Aug 26, 2008 9:47 pm

OK, Becca was willing to share her secrets to exercize and how she works her program. I hate walking outside because of the skeeters. So I guess some good ol' jumping jacks and running in place.

I promise to do 5 minutes tonight to start.

Anyone else with a resolution?

I should do something regularly....but if anyone can figure out how to make a day 28 hours instead of just 24, that would help alot!

Hermit do you run outside?

And I just realized I could have called this the "Athletic Supporter"

I like the idea of watching TV while struggling. The gym is just down the road...that road paved with good intentions.

Since I'm resting on the couch after getting home from the gym, I thought I'd throw out one or two thoughts.

1. Exercise without a proper & healthy diet will not help you loose weight. Some crazy, ultra restricted diet without moderate exercise won't help you either. There is no magic pill.

2. Fancy equipment, crazy infomercial gyzmos, gym memberships......they work for some people but are a complete waste for most people. A comfortable pair of walking shoes is all you need to start.

3. Trying to exercise alone is the easiest way to fall of the exercise bandwagon. Sooner or later you'll have a bad day and not have time or just simply not feel like working out and before you know it, three weeks have passed and your back to couch potato land. Get a friend who wants to exercise too, agree to the exercise program (walking, running, swimming, aerobics, yoga, etc...) and schedule. When someone else is involved, you are much less likely to talk yourself out of exercising.

4. Do exercises that you like. If you hate running, you're not going to stick with it very long. Try cycling, swimming, join a group activity (step aerobics....rec league basketball....martial arts classes). Any and all physical activities count, so have fun doing it!

5. Start slow and build up to higher levels of activity. If you jump off the couch and try to run 5 miles, good chance you're going to hurt yourself. Getting hurt sucks, and I know that all too well.

Cycling is the only thing that has ever really worked for me. Probably because it is the only exercise that I really enjoy. I do, however hate riding a stationary bike of any kind!!

That's why in rotten weather, I walk in the mall. Air-conditioning, grades and stairs if I want them, flat areas if I don't, and if it IS a good day, I can walk the sidewalks outside. A lot of malls have organized mall walkers programs--you're on your own as far as how far and how often, but by registering as a mall walker, you can walk in the mall before the stores open (if shopping is too much of a distraction--for me, it's part of the motivation!) One of the malls here is 1/2 mile per level...a full circuit around the outside is a mile and a half; one circuit of the ground and second floors is a mile. And it's never boring because the scenery (and people) are always changing.

Of course, I have to walk outside at least twice a day anyway, no matter what weather, because of the dogs. But with the mall handy, if its too freezing cold to walk long or far, I have no excuse to chuck the exercise. I stop in the mall on the way home from work.

Walking in the grocery store counts, too--even if I only need a couple quick things, I try to make a complete circuit of the store while I'm there. ;)

I've also been doing gentle hatha yoga poses for the last month or so, to work on strengthening and reinforce my balance after surgery. If anyone gets FitTV, I can highly recommend the 'Namaste Yoga' show; I can do many of the poses and hold them for longer periods after only a month--even after three abdominal surgeries.

Around here, there is a group of folks that "walk the mall" for exercise. They just make laps around the mall for however long and get some exercise.

I hate to exercise, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it!
I've tried everything and finally settled on running, because it's the easiest-well not "easy", but something I can do.
It's hot right now and the skeeters actually push me along, I have to fight off loose dogs, but for some reason I still get up and do it every weekday.
I would prefer to not run, but if I take a week off, I can't fit into my clothes anymore, it's terrible
I love to eat too much :(

 I'm in! For the next two days I promise to sand the td and pick up the baby and run the vacuum and make the beds and I might even dust....... NOT

How about if I promise to walk the lake front and fish. :D Is dreaming about it doing it.

You can change the title if you want. Just click on edit and change away 8) ;)

Just teasin. I will try to find time to walk. But I agree with the eating part. I lost weight preparing for radiation with an iodine free diet. :? Now I am gaining it back. Gotta eat better and exercise.
