Hey All,

I need more "stands" to keep things off of the floor and was thinking I would just get some milk crates. I have a few saw horses, but you can never enough places to keep things up off the ground. where in the world do you get them?! i obviously dont want to steal them  i assume you can buy them somewhere??

As far as milk crates, I'm not sure where to get the real thing.... not the Wally World knock-off cheap imitations. I can from experience say not to use plastic 5 gallon buckets.... they start to buckle without something to spread the weight around the whole edge. Squares of cheap plywood scraps helped; but it's not a permanent fix. I'm sure you will find a creative alternative. Automotive jack stands under the corners of the frame would work, and you could always sell them after the build is finished (or hang on to them for the next build).

Hi Mandy -

I needed one to hold my propane tank and found one in a grassy area in a Home Depot/strip mall area. Well, I stopped, picked it up and admired my freebie and continued on into Home Depot. Well, when I came back out about 45 minutes later and was leaving the parking lot, I noticed a couple of men with their "help me, I'm broke and thirsty" signs looking all around that area. Wellllll...it hit me that I probably just stole their only piece of furniture. :o I still have it...it works good.

Milk crates

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Wed Oct 29, 2008 9:53 am

Hi Mandy,

I've purchased good quality ones at teacher supply stores and Staples.
You may try your local dairy or milk processing plants if you have any around, or grocery stores ( I live in cow country and we have lots of crates in this area that are sometimes released as surplus)
Also, keep in mind the old college dorm room bookshelves....by that I mean concrete blocks with a piece of wood across them. You can stack them pretty high and make them as long as the wood is strong. If you put those up them you'd have something to stack the crates on.

I'd seen those shysters working all the corners around town and they take turns holding those signs. I did feel bad for 1 minute but I got over it. I just look at it as "free-cycling". And, as many times as I have donated to their "thirst fund", I have probably paid for the damn thing.

Hi Mandy,

Do you any Wawa's near you? The one near me has hundreds of those crates stacked up outside. They'd probably sell you a couple.

Mandy,
There's a beverage store around the block and I just asked the owner if he had any extras.................and he gave me a half dozen.

I put my 20lb propane tank in on so it sits level while in the back of my pickup. I think the rest have "stuff" in them. Helps keep the garage a little bit organized.

Mandy, you could get some of these sawhorse brackets...

Then the next time you're at a lumber yard, ask the yard hands if they have any extra runners you can have.(that's the 2x4s under a bundle of boards) I used to work at a lumber yard, and to them, the runners are thrash, I gave them away all the time. The beauty part of it is, they almost don't need to be cut, just fasten the brackets and go. Or you could cut the legs down to a size to suit your needs.

These things are better than milk crates and they are free from anywhere that sells trailer frames...I picked mine up from TSC and some from Lowes...I've been back for more since. They usually just get thrown away.
