It is funny that you mention this breed, I was just watching The Dog Whisperer last night and they had a boxer that the owners couldn't calm down. Cesar was able to get the dog to calm down after it got wound up and was able to teach the owners how to do it.

I've only known (not owned) 2 and they had very similar temperment. I'll put it in one word: Hyper.

Never owned one: but a lady I was dating recently had one. According to her, boxers are people dogs; but not always good around other dogs. Don't now if that's true, so it might be something worth investigating. Other wise, I would say go for it.

+1 and I would add if you can take the time to turn some of that energy into obedience training, a boxer can be the model of good manners. Both the wife anddaughter work at the humane society and the boxer is used at all kinds of funtions they have to demonstrate obedience, using various training aids etc.

Boxers are awesome family dogs and scary looking enough to keep the bad guys away. One of my favorite breeds.

I had one for 12 years (avg life is 6-9 yrs)
She is the best dog I have ever owned. loving gentle smart great with kids. Broke my heart when she passed away. Her brother was just the same.
Kenny owned one also. very good dog. well trained.
I would tell anyone to get a boxer. great dogs!!!!!!!!!
Lulu was energetic but I would not say she was hyper. She loved to play but she also loved to sit by me on the couch and watch tv.

We have one in the house now for about 4 months. So far a very good dog. It is a white Female she passed the Vet. check so we brought her home. Her name is Pinks. A smart dog, learns fast, does not chew on anything but her toys and has to have constant human contact. Her hair is short so the cold is hard on her. She still thinks she is a lap dog. Best dog we have erver had.

Dr, Crash, I think your dog should be ruled out...

He sleeps with a cat for Gods sake

I had one. Boxers are very good with kids and can be well mannered. They love to play ball and tug'o'war and play with children. They like to go for walks, too. On the negative side, some boxers can be over-protective of their home and family. (I had a friend who had to get rid of one for that reason. The dog would corner people in the backyard and not let them out of that corner!) Boxers may have sensitive stomachs and could need a special diet.

Never let a Boxer get into a dog fight. I've heard that, if they get into a fight and taste blood, they'll always want to fight from that time on.
Boxers have very strong jaws. It's been said that the only dog with a stronger jaw is a pit bull.

I've read that Boxers usually live around 8-10 years. Mine lived 12-1/2; but not without a couple surgeries to remove cancerous tumors. When he got old and had arthritis, I gave him subcutaneous injections with a special lisate formula from a test and research center for dogs. The vet there told me they are "walking tumor factories". The third time he got a cancerous tumor, it was in his liver and that was it for him. All things considered, they are great dogs but seeing mine sick with cancer three times made me decide not to get another.

I'm surprised you haven't heard from Planovet yet! He could probably tell you a lot more.

Maybe you can check to see if Wikipedia has a write-up on boxers. They seem to have something on most breeds.

Our eldest godchild has two and she adores them. If I were ever again to get a purebred dog a boxer would be a the top of the list, but I doubt that I'll ever do that. If I do decide to get another dog I'll probably go to the pound and save a mutt.
