question about sunday services while camping

Postby Rem » Tue Mar 31, 2009 10:38 pm

For anyone who practices their faith, regardless of what denomination or even religion, what do you do when attending a group gathering or camping trip that exstends beyond a day usually set aside for worship?
Private time, or group worship non-denominational?

I don't do religion but I didn't notice much at the ones I've been to. I think most are considerate enough at gatherings to do whatever they prefer without making a big tado of it. (no disrespect meant to anyone) I have been to campgrounds that have services that are usually non-denominational.
I'd say do what you like, unlike some I have no problem with anyone's personal beliefs tho. (provided they aren't pushing them on me)

...for myself, I like to see gatherings kept pretty secular...inline with my own personal beliefs, I find the great outdoors the be the grandest cathedral possible...at the LCG, we have been lucky to have had two great guys in attendance who are also preachers...Buck and Scott..we have them ask the blessing for each of our meals...I don't know what they may do in private(or with others) on Sunday morn............

Rem I think that will depend on who you are camping with. We have private time.

I agree with everybody do their own thing. I guess I was asking, are their ever organized meetings to remember and respect. Short meetings of course since it is camping, a kind of fellowshipping. I for instance would enjoy some spiritual time with fellow campers and don-t care so much about what brand of worship but, respecting the creator of the world we enjoy when camping.

I have been to acouple TOW (teardrop oregon washington) gatherings and have had a non denominational services on sunday. Its open to those that want to come, if not you do what you want. If there's not a service you could start one.
We all have a great time

Wow, what a fascinating question because this (your question) is an incredible aspect of most of my camping adventures and I talk about it a lot. All of my trips are two things in nature: physical and spiritual.

Fitness always comes in with working out, hiking, biking, hot springs, etc. And spiritual comes in with meditation, yoga retreats, monastery retreats, etc. But the incredible spiritual part is I always seem to be guided to the perfect service at a local church wherever I am.

I have often said that some of the best services with the most resonating messages have occurred when I travel. Sunday morning is an adventure. Sometimes I'll just take a bike ride in whatever town I'm in and pull over at the first church that "feels right".

The members I've met at these churches over the years are as much of a gift as the sermon. I can recall being in crazy Quartzsite, AZ and stopping by a makeshift tent church (for the makeshift seasonal thousands of RV folks that live there for a couple of months). Anyhow, it was between services and the pastor and I sat and talked for about an hour. His story and what he is doing with his life was very inspiring and I'll never forget it.

I guess I would suggest you just "go with it" wherever you are. And those times when you are truly isolated in nature or whatever, always bring some good spiritual reading material and make the space you're in sacred. I've been high up on a hike in Sabino Canyon in AZ and my girlfriend and I will burn sage, say affirmations, and read inspirational passages. It's all about your intentions.

Happy Camping!

I've found I can carry a Bible anywhere I go, and God listens no matter where I happen to be. I've never claimed to be religious, just a Christian, so organized gatherings are fine, but I can worship anywhere. My wife on the other hand, prefers organized services. To each there own, so do whatever feels right.

When I camp, I will sometimes do a devotion and extend a invite to whoever wants to come. No pressing or prying. People who like to drink or play cards or talk sports or watch Nascar or play hop-scotch congregate and do so at our gatherings; everyone who wants to take part in "any" activity at the gatherings does so, and there's no problem.

I don't see why those of us who regularly worship on Sundays mornings can't/shouldn't do the same at a gathering...Again, there is no pressing or prying to get someone who does not worship to come to a devotion.

We are all big boys and girls here on the forum...a place where there's a place for everyone.

I'm Catholic so I go to http://www.masstimes.org/dotnet/Default.aspx and look up local churches in the area and the time of the service.

It's kind of cool to see other churches around the world and see the differences in their masses.

Most , Well, the ones I've gone to , Provincial Parks up here usually have a service in the park On Sunday mornings, with various churches in the area hosting it on different weekends. All are, or seem to be non denominational, with a short spiritual message and a fair amount of singing. They are usually set up by the youth groups of the various churches, and tend to be very interesting. After the service they serve coffee and cookies, and you can mingle with fellow campers. A nice way to spend an hour or so in the morning.....
