Virus Warning For WINDOWS USERS ONLY!!!!

Postby toypusher » Wed Jan 27, 2010 7:36 pm

the local news had a story on tonight and I thought it might be worth a mention here.

The 'Antivirus 2008 (or 2009 or 2010)' virus is on the rampage again.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

If you get any kind of popup warning of virus infections in you computer make absolutely sure that it has the name of your antivirus software on it somewhere before clicking anything.

It will look alot like this:

Image

If you get one of these, just close your browser and do NOT click anywhere on the popup!!

You can then google 'Antivirus 2010' (or whatever year it has on the popup) and learn about it and how to remove it if it has gotten into your computer!

That's the one I've got on the other partition right now.....trashed the system before I could get rid of it. Pretty sure that's what I gotta go chase out of another computer tomorrow.

Yep. One of these days, I gotta think about getting some anti-virus software for my macs. I've been putting it off since around 1986. I reckon, one of these years, I'm gonna need it and I'll be sorry. I really shouldn't let two decades of virus-free operation suck me into a false sense of security. ;)

LOL - you sound like my brothers.

My anti-virus software is called Linux, but back in my Windows days I used AVG it was great, free, and didn't ever screw with my system like some of the more commercialized AV brands.

CD are you planning to get an iPad?

BTW - that Mac antivirus article was probably commissioned by McAfee or Symantec.

No iPad here. no cell phone. I do have a flat-screen monitor and an ergonomic keyboard (both second-hand). But yeah, my anti-virus software came installed with the OS. It's Ubuntu Linux. The browser is Firefox. The office software is Open Office.

Total software investment? $0.00. In the last environment where I had to live with a Windows machine, I had XP, which isn't too awful. Didn't have AVG, though -- TPTB at the job were all about high-dollar security fixes.

(Ubuntu Linux and Firefox. It's like a mantra. Been repeating it since '06.)

BTW: If the MAC and Linux users want to start a mutual admiration society then someone can start another thread. Thank you.

If you get the virus, don't panic. Also don't try to shut down and reboot your computer, also, do not accept any registry changes. If still have access to the internet download the malwarebytes software (there is a free 30 day trial version). Load the software and run a full scan. Once it says its okay, reboot, then rerun the scan. This removed many a virus that McAfee couldn't.
