Looking for a cost effective way to have website hosted...

Postby Guest » Sat Aug 06, 2005 12:25 am

Any web wizards out there know of a cost effective way, so I can launch the website for the '06 Redwood Gathering?
BTW- Will was telling me about a place that will host/redirect it right from my computer for free, but that's a no go because of my whoping 28.8 Kbps max connection speed. (Slow motion in motion you might say and I do want to show images)
I've got the domain name parked right now...
My needs will be a one page web for general info with a printable pre registration form and a registry sheet to show registration status. (Maybe that would be a three page web?)
I would like to have this site up and running before the official date announcement on January 3rd, 2006.
BTW-I do have FrontPage software and I used it to build my current website for my business, (What an experience that was...) but my local host does not like or reccomends going with FrontPage. (Something to do with how the program configures the HTML)
As you can probably tell... I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to working in cyberspace. :lol:
Any and all suggestions welcome...
Thank You.

Dean,

I can help you out on that one. I have a inactive website that I'd be glad to let you use. Plenty of storage and bandwidth. I do a little web design too, so we can put it together without much problem.

Let me know.

Joanne,
That is great!!!
Can your innactive site's name be changed to the domain name that I bought , then parked?
If so, how do I go about about unparking the domain name? (It's parked at GoDaddy)
If memory serves me correct, don't I need to register the domain name with Internic or something like that?
(Sorry for my ignorance)

Bg & Joanne,
Thank You!!!
You guys are great...
I really appreciate you two offering your help.
If we can get the word out and promote Pamplin Grove for what it is, the '06 gathering will be a huge success. The objective here is to get folks to come and experience the redwoods firsthand. The cool summer temperatures here also offer a great escape from the high summer temperatures elsewhere around the Western states. A website that accurately showcases Pamplin Grove will draw folks from long distances.
I believe this will be a gathering to plan a vacation around.
With your help, others will live an experience of a lifetime...

bg,
I believe that the NameServer change has taken place, because I'm getting an ftp formatted page when I go to pamplingrove.com
I have a test web page ready to publish, if your server has FrontPage server extensions it should work.
If not, I hope Joanne knows how to write HTML, because I don't...

bg,
"Houston, we may have a problem..."
I get an error message that says client closed connection when I try to publish the webpage.
Maybe those changes haven't taken place yet?
BTW- When I open Frontpage on my PC, I have to use a set username/password and once opened, I used the set username/password that you furnished when attempting to publish...
I checked when I was logged in on your end and it says that the FrontPage server extensions are installed.
I just tried to publish the test page again and got a different error message...
I love this stuff! :lol: :? :lol:

bg,
Sorry I'm such a clutz...
I did manage to get things to upload into your server through Secure SLL.
It wouldn't show, but I could see and view the files in File Manager.
There was a problem with uploading some of the png files, so I sent the images and the index page to the trash, so I could simplify a new test page with just jpgs.
Front page wouldn't let me save the new changes on my end, (Kept saying that there was no web server on port 80) so I deleted the whole thing on my end and built a new simple web page with just jpgs. naming the website a different name.
Again, I uploaded the second website through Secure SLL, but when I log on and check the File Manager on your end, I've got the index page to show, but I had to load the four images right from your end.
Everything is there now...
I won't do anything more until I hear back from you, sounds like I messed things up good... :(

bg,
You will need to intsruct me on that one.
I just tried publishing to ftp.pamplingrove.com and it uploaded, but to where I know not...
Earlier today I was prompted to find out what your File Posting Protocol & File Path on your server was for my home page...
If you want a good laugh go in and look at my error log. (Do I hold the record?)

What can I say?... The computer won today.

bg,
I'm having a heckova time here.
FrontPage is not even letting me connect to your server now.
My guess is that you shut something off, maybe to clean up something I made a mess of...
Just so that I know I'm following you right...
I publish to http://www.pamplingrove.com using the filepath of /www.pamlingrove.com right?
The problem I'm having right now is the only way I seem to be able to get FrontPage to allow me to set a file path, is when I select SLL connection, but when I do that the website gets published to hhtps://www.pamplingrove.com.

bg,
Does "Client Closed Connection" mean that you shut something off?

Well you must have done something right because it does go to a blank page (totally blank that is) and I can pull up the page source so it is working just nothing on the page yet.

Here's what source code shows up:
<!--- <html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>New Page 1</title>
</head>

<body>

</body>

</html> --->

BTW - I think the 'client' would be you.
