Yep, just about any alternative you can find is better. I've found that Norton and Mcaffee do nothing but drag your system down with them.

John, consider yourself DAMNED lucky...you really need to get AVAST or AVG or any antivirus IMMEDIATELY ...unprotected, you are in danger to yourself and others...regardless of what you might think...Zone Alarm is an adequate firewall and will check emails but nothing else for bugs...get yourself protected with AVAST and run it on deep scan a couple of times...you may be suprised at what pops up.........

I've found that Norton and Mcaffee do nothing but drag your system down with them.

I currently have Norton. It is going to expire soon.
Once I install one of the free programs do I just uninstall the Norton program? Uninstall Norton first, then download the free program?

What is the best way to switch over to something different?

Go to Norton's website and insure that you get the 'Correct' instructions for uninstalling the version of Norton Antivirus that you have. Just going to 'Add/Remove Programs' will not remove it in it's entirety. You should definitely remove the Norton before loading a new AntiVirus program. I would recommend downloading the new program, disconnect from the internet, remove Norton, install the new AntiVirus program, then reconnect to the internet and insure that you have the latest updates.

Kerry is right, do a thorough uninstall. Norton does not like to leave once it has found a home. After you uninstall it check 'C:/program files' and make sure it's folder is gone too.
It may take a little work but once you get it out you'll be glad you did.

I have had AVG for over 3 years now.

Image
I see Jack and others like the AVAST
for its therapeutic effects over system
virus worries.

Norton is like a dead baby in the womb of a loving mother.
It drags down the living system with interminable delays of system workings.
The overhead that Norton imposers seems almost unbearable to we who see
its hamstringing effects on the average users machine. It has unforgiving
idiosyncrasies that are annoying but to many make it intolerable.
Macaffee has similar effects as Rich suggested above. Simply put these
programs have been loaded over time with extras that invade the privacy
of your system as an octopus would invade the safe places of its pray.
To find and use the free AVG or as some suggests AVAST will have its rewards.

System speed and peace of mind without the overhead and system drag
comes to those that leave Norton. To rip out its entrails is a time
consuming and painstaking endeavor as Rich and Kerry suggest but the uP
side is system performance without the spurious effects on your chosen
programs that encounter these 2 system resource hogatha'z.

Discussion of the benefits of AVAST vs. AVG.

Can anyone who has tried both explain what advantages they have
found with AVAST over AVG for the uninitiated?

Why should one give uP AVG and walk into the brighter light of
AVAST in the opinion of those more enlightened on the subject through
experience?

In all honesty I can't say that there is a major difference. They both served their intended purposes well for me.
Avast seems to update a bit more frequently but I don't see it as a big deal.
I believe Avast may cover a somewhat broader area on it's own than AVG does but like I said they both worked well.
I even used them both at the same time for over a year with no conflict between them, something that won't happen with MacCaffee and Norton.
Personally I like the user interface of Avast just a little better but that is just personal preference.
In either case I haven't had any trouble with web nasties invading my PC so I'd say pick one and install it!!! Just install something.

Well I Dl'd Avast last night and played with it for a while. The thing I noticed right from the get-go was that my computer was now slower! I looked for some settings to see why/what was causing it to be, but found nothing.

So I removed the program and the speed was back!

There is an AVG 7.5 Free DL available! I found it this AM. When the notice comes up, click on the link, at the bottom of the page it takes you to there is a link to 'AVG 7.5 Free'.

Hope this helps,
Pete

I uninstalled Norton yesterday and installed Avast. No change in speed (if anything slightly faster).

I wonder why you had a problem??
