Widows Vista

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Todah,

If you have Office 2003, it will indeed run just fine on Vista, that's what I installed. Which version of Office do you have? What type of conversion program are you required to use?

I too, just bought a new laptop and it came with Vista, at first I wasn't thrilled with the idea, however, Vista is growing on me. Now, would I run out and buy the Vista upgrade for my desktop running XP, no way, not worth the expense. However, Vista has been running just fine on the laptop and I have been able to do everything I need to do. I did have to install one program (EVPN) in the XP compatibilty mode, but it runs fine.

I couldn't w/o downloading some kind of coversion program (which did not download successfully). I'm stuck with a file that I can only open on my new home computer.

I planned on loading my old Powerpoint and Exel software on it. They ran on XP, hopefully they will w/Vista. Has anyone done that with Vista?

Todah, My MS Office software all works fine on Vista.

I have disks for Windows Professional 2002 and Office 2000. All I wanted to do was load WORD and PowerPoint. The system kept telling me that my installation IDs weren't correct which is bogus.

I would buy newer versions of the software, but I want to be able to open the files on other computers that don't have Vista.

Methinks there is no compelling reason to buy Microsoft Office any more... There are better programs for free. Most are open source and well supported too. They will work with Word docs no problem (not so good with Word Perfect though).

I like the new AbiWord a lot.
And OpenOffice.org v 2.2 RCE has a whole suite that is very good indeed... Including good Excel & Power Point replacements.

Just lookie here: http://www.filehippo.com/software/office/

Lots more good freeware here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46 ... lities.htm

They all work with Vista, I'm told.

PS: ...and if you think Firefox is good... check out the latest version of the Opera. There's just so much to like about Opera V9 that you could easily create a case that it's better than Firefox!

I've about had it with Microsuck. When IE7 came out it was so bad I switched to Firefox and not only does it work better and faster, but I haven't had a bit of trouble with adware or spyware since. I used to get inundated with the crap.

I need to buy a laptop soon and I've heard good things about Linux - anybody here using it?

I just loaded Ubuntu on a backup machine... the jury is still out on that...

You might want to grab a live CD and see what it looks like before you wipe your harddisk...

btw, here's a list of distros and which appear to be more popular...

Mike...

P.S. I know of people that load only the MS OS, and everything else they use comes from the open source arena.

I have 3 linux machines, but do not use any of them on any sort of 'full time basis'. I simply have too much 'Windows only' stuff. Although there is always the 'Parallels' route to run the Windows stuff that you can not live without!!

Ubuntu, in my experiences is a really good flavor of Linux. It is a good solid desktop system for general use by anyone. Anyone thinking of switching to Linux should go to 'SourceForge.net' and see how much FREE software that you can get for Linux (and other OSes also).

My friend says there's a major problem with Vista and Quicken and Quickbooks, and that if Intuit (Quicken) doesn't fix it in a few days, he's going to have remove Vista from his new machine and install XP.

He's a semi-retired accountant and has to work with those supplied files.
Here we go again!

I bought my New Computer about 3 months ago, it has XP , but came with a free Vista Upgrade. But I have been holding off untill I heard if it was a good idea or not. From what I been reading , I think I'll wait a little longer. 8)

Double check the fine print. I've heard that some people are complaining that the free upgrade isn't actually "Free".

I think the upgrade has different versions, from free to not-so-free (If you want all the bells and whistles).

Microshaft and free in the same sentence??? Highly unlikely on the best of days.
