Bobgorilla: Tampa Bay Area

Postby Alfred » Sun Jul 15, 2007 8:55 pm

Are you still in St. Pete/Tampa area? We still come home to see the folks frequently, plan to be down there for a few days at the end of July. I still teach at St. Petersburg College as an online instructor, too. Would welcome an opportunity to see your teardrop and get some building hints.

I think all the Drive-In Theaters in Pinellas are gone now, unless the Mustang is still around in Pinellas Park/Largo. We went often to the Thunderbird Drive In, which I think was in the Tyrone area. Went to Pasadena sometimes as a kid, was that the one that had the playground/swings up front for the kids? I think the Hillsborough Avenue Drive In is still open in Tampa, but that is a long haul from St. Pete.

Was happy to see during a recent visit that Biff Burger is still open. Visit: www.biffburgers.com I bet teardrops would be right at home in a Biff Burger parking lot!

I remember passing a Drive In Theater on Park Blvd near Seminole that was converted to a Flea Market. It was converted for as long as I could remember.

I am still in St. Pete, I actually work for the city. I'm unfortunately still in dreamer stage as far as a tear goes. I believe you're right that all drive ins are closed except the 1 on Hillsborough (been there 3 times in last 4 years) now called Fun Lan drive in. Your also right about the swings (I went there as a teenager to see such classics as Groove Tube, Flesh Gordon and Kentucky Fried Movie). And I think tears would fit right in at Biff paticularly if they were towed by antiques like some on here, I actually ate there last Wednesday ( I prefer Sunset Travern for the food though if not the scenery) Let me know when you'll be here maybe we could meet at Biff on car or bike night.

More St. Pete Memories

Postby Alfred » Sun Jul 15, 2007 10:30 pm

Oh yeah! Almost forgot about the Sunset Tavern. My Dad was a letter carrier out of Euclid Station when I was a kid he delivered all up and down 9th street and 4th street, including the Sunset (Also Sunken Gardens, Olsons Drive-In Restaurant, which was a car lot last time I looked for it, the Dog House Diner, which is now a Thai Restaurant, I think. We saw a lot of movies at the Mustang Drive In Theater. When I was a kid it was one screen only, when I was a teenager they added the 2nd screen. Then they started the flea market, then the movie closed but the flea market remained. I think they tore it down to build the new Lowes or something in there? The whole area has grown and changed so much (I still remember going to see the mermaids at Webbs City). I've only been out of there a year, and every time I visit it seems there is something new. Noticed they have torn down Pinellas Square Mall, which I remember them building when I was 8yo or so. Also Gateway Mall. Oh - Noticed the Palms Theatre in Pinellas Park is gone (Was a music store for several years) on Park Blvd near US19.

I do not believe you are that stupid as to post a comment on someones sexual orientation on this board. Especially when it was not the object of the thread, either on or off topic.

Whether you are bright enough to grasp that there are many gay members on this board does not matter, just be informed that there are and try to behave accordingly.

Did you read my post? I'm commenting on the guy's character, for God's sake.

He's a total phony--and if he's for a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, let him support it.

Not hide behind the Republican party line on this issue which denies rights to gays and makes them STILL feel like pariahs. (He sure does.)

It's 2007--and we still have politicians who lie about their orientation and pander to the right just to get elected.

What an example of leading by example.

Although in Missouri if your car can drive into the inpection place and then come to a complete stop, and the wipers, lights and horn works, you usually pass.

they had been talking about doing away with them altogether.

Charlie Crist --- just another meat puppet for the rich elete.

surveytech wrote:Not sure if he's gay (dont really care) but he certainly is a ZERO.

Which is exactly what we will all be saving on our tax bills with his highly touted property tax reform.

.

Crist's so called tax reform without the spin, smoke and mirrors was nothing more than a way to save the rich property developers some dough. Their delima was due to the almost complete stop in condo/housing sales and they were stuck with billions of dollars in "improved" properties that didn't sell. The tax reform was just a freeze on property tax assesments, meaning the counties can't collect more tax in 2007-8 than they did in 2006-7, so the aboved mentioned wealty developers and land & condo speculators wouldn't be assessed on their improvements. So now with the deficit in revenue, spending has to be cut, and who bares the brunt of that? Universities, students, the working poor, and job seekers just to name a few. We haven't had a human being for a governor since Lawton Chiles. I for one am fed up with government being run by meat puppets that are owned by the big corporations.

Here is a picture from the Palm Beach Post with Charlie Crist and his boyfriend??? Obviously not your typical South Florioda gay Couple

She's a former beauty queen, mother of two and they've been dating for several months. Or it could just be another example of the Great Right Wing Conspiracy to put a gay man in the governor's office in every state.

Ira, you may have hit the pickle juice a little early on this one. :D

If I think that Charlie Christ's boyfriend is attractive does that make me gay?

You're joking, right? The fact that they claim to be "dating" for several months?

And he's never been married? Nor seen dating any women? Plus he's no spring chicken? And there's testimony from gay lovers?

The guy is gay for God's sake.

If I can live with it, why can't HE!?

Look at him! He's gay SQUARED!!!!

You're starting to sound like Merv Griffin who used to always ask Liberace, "Lee, how come you never found the right girl and settled down?"

Just move here to Texas. We have really weak polution regulations. Of course, we are the number one most poluted state, with the number one most poluted city (Houston).

Yup. Nuthin' like takin' a deep lung full of Texas chunky-style air. <sniffle-cough>

Seriously, when you buy a car, you should expect to maintain it -- and buy insurance (unlike the guy who did $11000 in damage to my car last month - grrrrr).

The reason to fix a tailight with a hole in it is to keep water out that could cause it to fail. It's a tailight housing. You can get them at pick-n-pull for 30 bucks.

As for Texas inspections -- they cost $25 bucks a year in Dallas, where the EPA testing is required just like Austin. Not an expense I lose sleep over.

As a car and driving enthusiast, I cringe several times a day at what I see on the roads of Dallas. Bald tires, Seriously underinflated tires. Cars with hoods held down with bungie cords. Cars blowing blue smoke -- probably burning 2 quarts of oil a week.

I inspect my cars on a regular basis, and get them serviced on schedule. As a consequence, my cars are safe and don't polute. Maybe if everyone took responsibility for properly maintaining their own cars, the government wouldn't need to inspect them.

As much as I'd like to agree with you in principal... I know that just isn't possible for a large segment of the population. I know of many waitresses, Walmart employees and lots of others that simply don't make enough money to drive anything but 10 - 15 year old cars. Many of them struggle to keep them running at all. We have a governor that will blythly put all these folks out of a job? Sure, it would be great for the environment to get rid of all these older cars and poorly maintained cars. Maybe they can all ride bicycles to work? :o

Then it comes to...
Is driving a privilege or a right? I think it is a privilege and sometimes a luxury. All but the smallest of towns have some semblance of public transit (which are taxpayer subsidized). If it means you have to ride a bike, then that's what you should do.

If you are going to drive, you are obligated to take care of your vehicle as it effects all of the other drivers on the road.

When my grandfather died, my grandma who had never drove, tried to learn, she was too scared and never learned to drive. She walked or rode the bus every day to her housekeeping job at the hospital in the most run down part of town. This was in Michigan, she went to work, rain snow or sun. Yes is was inconvenient, but yes, you can live without a car.
