I remember homemade ice cream from a kid. My brother scooped up the new snow off the car and my mom made ice cream. Just sort of natural that I kept the tradition going.

I remember my mom making snow ice cream, Boy that was a real treat back them days. Sadly I do not remember how she made it. I did google it and did find a receipe for it, only we rarely get any good snow here. I would like to try it for old times stake.

Craig says he remembers churning ice cream outside one winter using ice chipped out of the lake. The ice on the lake was about 3 feet thick. It was -30° F. and consequently, they didn't need to use any salt to lower the freezing action of the ice. The ice cream was done in record time.

Makes you wonder about anyone who would be making ice cream outside when it's -30° F!

Oh, he tells me they were in the 170° F. sauna before going out to make the ice cream.

Gotta love northern Minnesota in the winter!

Well then were in luck..  Finland has very long and cold winters.
Lots of Ice in the lakes too. And ohhh yes many of us Finns cut a big hole in the ice on the lake and go swimming after a very hot sauna..   And roll in the snow as well..
Really circulates the blood.. but not recommended for folks with heart problems.. :D :D

Should be able make some Ice Cream real quick... ;)

It doesnt snow on the coast of northern California so it is just a memory. BTW it was in Vancouver Wa where mom made the ice cream. I was born there. I have relatives in Chehalis.

It would be a nice thought but I,ll try one 1st and see if these Finns will enjoy seeing one of them..

I found all kinds of recipes here in Finland as well. And they have Ice Cream making machines but electric.. mainly Italian Made.. but to me it just doesnt fit our thoughts and occasion.. It has to be the Ol Fashion Way..to fit the tear topic.. ;)

That is a nice idea though..also I know of an ol time Barrel maker here
and Im positive that he could make one.. Im just not sure about the resto of the unit..

Its always easier said than done..

I have been making ice cream all summer. Trying to find the best recipe to take to a competition at our county fair. Here's the one that we like best so far.

Strawberry Sundae Ice Cream

eggbeaters = to 4 eggs (* See note below)
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 16 oz. pk strawberries (fresh or frozen, mashed)
1 or 2 ripe bananas, mashed
1 20oz can crushed pineapple
1 cup chopped nuts (we prefer pecans, but walnuts, almonds, anykind)
1 16oz can strawberry soda
1 15oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 15oz can evaporated milk
2 cups heavy whipping cream
2 cups half and half

In a large bowl, beat eggbeaters until foamy. Add sugar, and beat until sugar is disolved. Add remaining ingrediants and stir well.Pour into ice cream freezer and process. Makes about 6 quarts.

* Egg beaters are a pasteurized egg product. If you use these instead of raw eggs in ice cream mixtures, you don't have to heat the mixture to pasteurize the eggs.

We really like this recipe, and it keeps well in the freezer if we don't eat it all at once.

Betsey- I've got to try your vanilla recipe. Haven't found one yet that that we really enjoy! Yours sounds great.
