I have been offfline for a few weeks...Thanks everyone for the comments.

I have used the lil boat four times in September-October. It hasn't leaked a bit. Peple watch with some skepticism when I get the pices of my dinghy out of the car. But the same crowd gathers with questions after I have enjoyed an hour or two of being on the lake and then come back to shore.

"Where did you get that!"

"What ? you really made that..."

"Where did you ever get the idea for a folding boat?"

"I can't believe the hinge in made out of fishing line."

"How can it fold and not leak?"

"Want to sell it?"

Dee bee, that is such a great little boat!! I just had to go to the Flapdoodle site and check it out more. I like the fact that you can also add a little electric trolling motor on it, since I have been looking for plans for something like this that I might be able to build for my mom. She wants a little boat to putt around in, with her dog, and this looks like it might be a good choice.

Just out of curiousity, why did you choose to use the filament stitching method as opposed to the metal hinges? I am wondering if the filament method would work out better.

Great job on that boat!

Hi Amy

I used 50 # test mono fishing line instead of the metal hinges because I couldn't see how the hinges would stay in the wood. The hull is only 1/4 " thick. I didn't see how a screw into 1/4" would hold very well. Also the curve of the hull plates causes the axis of the hinges to torque. The stitched hinge seems to be able to handle this well.

So far it works great. Time will tell as this was the first season. Note that this is basically a one person boat. A person and a small dog would be OK I think, too.

Lots of info on the website

Fantastic!! :applause: You did a right fine job. I would love to have a boat like yours, as I live near the shore in Connecticut. Good luck with your new boat, and happy sailing.

Postby Dee Bee » Wed Aug 27, 2008 7:29 pm

The end of summer I have had time to work on the sail rig for my little Barquito.

I hope I can make the sail intime to use her a bit this fall.
