That'd be WWII and that's why the air port was built where it was... To prepare our pilots for landing in London.

Heikkster,
Murray, Kneeland and Rohnerville are pretty small and Eureka/Arcata isn't no LAX, but you should be able to drop that puppy right in there.
Hughes Airwest used to land their big jets there several times per day when Howard was in charge and even Ol' "I'm Not A Crook-Trickey Dick" Richard Millhouse Nixon himself touch down there in Air Force One to have a look see at our big trees. Funny... It was right at "Harvest Time"...

Heikkie, you just have to put maximum flaps on the wings, feather the props, pull back on the yoke about fifty feet AGL, and drop that puppy right on the center line.

Here's a site where you can look up most airports in the US.

http://airnav.com/

Try Cape Blanco Oregon http://airnav.com/airport/5S6 . Approach is right over the ocean. We flew our ultralights out of there a couple weeks ago and it looked plenty big for a DC3. I took this pic of the airport from the air.

Heikki,
I used to teach flying at our Air Force Academy and learned to fly out at Colorado Springs airport. So there is about 11,00ft of runway there for you to practice on, also lots of nice scenery nearby like the front range of the Rocky Mtns. Pikes Peak (over 14,000ft hight) not sure in meters, is about 15miles away and quite a backdrop. So you might enjoy a simulation there....COS is the code. Another fun thing is to set the sim up to go to STL or St Louis, head east from that airport towards the Mississippi river and find the downtown area, then look for the "Arch". Set yourself up and fly through the arch. You might want to use a smaller plane for that one. Its been ages since I was on the sim but see if you can access the checklists for the DC-3 and see if they list the "Short field Landing Technique" If its there, follow it and you may still be able to drop her into Eureka! Good Luck.

Hi Carol

Isnt there a rule or formula as to calculate the landing strip length or such needed for a specific type plane?

Im going to practice this short strip landing for sure...

I can take off with a Boeing real well but the Landings with them are a real pain yet.. the small craft are quite easy already .. Piper, Cessna, Beechcraft and the Ol Barnstormers are the neates..

I,ll take a flight over the area you mention.. Im just not sure as to how accurate the places are on the FS 2004 maybe the newer one is better..

But Ive found most of the fields mentioned here so far.

This is a great thread indeed ..Its nice of the many that have replied..

Regards
Heikki ;) :applause:  :D

Heikki, Yes you are right there is a rough formula of various things to use to roughly calculate safe take-off and landing distances. These are usually printed on different tables in the owners manuals. Wind, gross weight, temp. all have a factor. For instance when doing our moutain flight training to Leadville, Colorado (elev about 10,000ft give or take a few) we used to have to make sure we were in and out of there usually in the am before it go to hot because the density altitude was such a factor due to the elevation, we would have run out of runway before we developed enough power and speed for safe takeoff. Its the highest elevation airport in North America. They actually give you a certificate when you land there. Its cool and quite dramatic as there is like a 2000ft drop off at one end of the runway. Another cool place you may want to check out is LUP on the Hawaian Island of Molokai. Your approach and takeoff is over the water. For 6 months out of the year your takeoff has to be timed with the waves, as when they crash on shore it can spray 40ft high off the end of the runway. Very cool to witness, not cool to get caught in. Enjoy!
