I heard about the camel spider too. There are a couple of pictures of soldiers picking up a pair that was fighting, but I guess it was proven to be fake. IDK though... (The pair that was fighting was HUGE)

That is a cool picture, but I wouldn't like something that jumps looking at me! Qauter or basket ball size...itcan leave me alone!

we have them here too. a while back I was at a remote location and had to stay in a large tent. we had one about 6" across living in the tent with us. three of my soldiers moved out because they couldn't catch/kill it and I wouldn't let them sleep with the light on. you could hear it running across the floor at night. they are an ugly things.

Another moment with Ranger Matt....Solpugid, Sun Spider, more closely related to scorpions. They are one of the few critters that kill everything they come across and then eat to they are filled. Interesting mouth parts like two pairs of scissors that can rotate as they chew through their prey. Very fast runners.

Time to revive the thread that won't die...

We got these beasties here in New Mexico their called Vinegaroons. They aren't poisoness but they spray an acid out of that tail in the back. It kind of smells like vinegar.

((((Shudder))))

They creep me out.

Centipedes, 6"+ long centipedes, those I can live without.

Vinegaroons are good to have around, even as ugly as they may be they kill and eat scorpions.

Black Widows are another problem, I seem to have a bumper crop of them this year. Very large females with very bad attitudes. Don't pick up anything without kicking it first, you never know whats hiding under it. I went to pick up a shopavac and a BW had built a nest under one of the side handles, I never saw it, the wife did and stopped me just before I grabbed it. Body the size of a dime! Anything that has been sitting for a while (3-4 month) is a good bet for finding them (non-running/parked cars #1) They like it hot, I mean HOT!

So folks if your traveling into the Great Southwest carry a stick and poke things, a lot. I lot of the things here won't kill you but you'll wish it had!

Thats why I leave the Daddy Long-legs alone they love them some black widows. I think the tarantullas(sp ?) at Ute lake are worse.

I don't have a severe problem with spiders but I do go after Black Widows. If a web is organized and nice looking it is NOT a BW. If the web looks like a mess with things going all the wrong direction, it is likely a BW. Note where they are and wait until well after dark. Get some stomping boots on, get out a good flashlight and smush bugs. If it is a little guy, it is a male, get them too. You will find the webs are extremely strong. They were used in bomb sights in WWII. Die Spidey Die!!

When I lived in Winnemucca, Nevada, we had a problem with BW's...even in the house. I found one in a VCR plastic cover and I knew what it was by the web. Also found one hiding in my sons fuzzy slippers. I had the house fumigated after that. Now here in Florida, I have found several Brown Widow spiders around my pool enclosure area. They are not aggressive but rather shy but they are still a spider in my book, so they don't stand a chance of seeing the dawn of a new day when I find them. I've been bit by a spider once in my garage. It was a tiny green one and it's bite was like a wasp sting. It itched and swole up but nothing more serious than that.

Ya well, they have spiders here that will trip you when you walk by and then they all get together and laugh at you pointing one of their little legs and holding their belly with another. It’s a little squeaky laugh. ;)
