We have a lot of fun building them. As well as camping in them.

We use camping matresses or reindeer skins under us and sleeping bags.
And they are plenty warm even inside just a sleeping bag.

Here are instructions for building them (This one in the Finnish Language)
however there are photos there as well.

I saw an English ad for those. They were $175. My husband already thinks I'm nuts! That would cinch it.

I'm not giving up yet on my igloo. We still have 3 months of winter to go![/quote]

Hey Finn,

The last few years we have been kinda spoiled. The winters have been so mild.

This is the kind of winter I remember as a kid. We have record amounts of snow and up until a week ago sub zero weather. -44 F was a record breaker! You learn to make do. Get outside ski, skate, snowshoe! You have to grab some sun and fun when you can. Two days after it was -44 we had +36 F, an 80 degree swing! Even then I couldn't get our snow to pack. I was watching the weatherman on tv tonight and he said that despite the huge amounts of snow we have it is a DRY snow. Very little moisture content. That may be why I can't get it to pack.

If you have a problem with little moisture content then it is a problem for certain. Here in the Southern part of Finland we have the sea which brings the moisture in. But at the same time it can be very dry as well depending upon the air masses or air flow. Up in the very Nothern Tip it totally different weather again. Also very unpredictable.
Your affected by the North Winds there too. Windchills are awesome brrr cold.

But we try also to make the best of things here in winter also. If we want to stay here we have to cope with it all.

Everything that I have read about making an igloo says that they are very warm inside. There is even a video on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pia4i5sr0o0 I think it would be great fun!

The igloo maintains a temp of 0 at most times and never gets below -10 celcius. Also you dont need to have a lot of blankets in them either.

Our cold air comes down from Canada and we call them "Alberta Clippers."

These are bitter cold with harsh strong winds. On the other hand our summers are very nice. And sometimes quite hot. The summer we built our teardrop it was oftern 103 F.

Ive seen them cut with a handsaw as well as a long knife. Also in this he speaks of snow being hard and dry for building. The knife that I use for this the blade is 450mm in length. As well as a camping handsaw.
