Tradgedy Strikes with only hours left of 2009

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Juneaudave » Thu Dec 31, 2009 10:07 am

I just woke up...my sympathes to the families of the victims, and to the peaceful people of Finland. The random acts of violence that you have been exposed to recently have got to be frustrating and unsettling...Dave

Heikki,

I am saddened by the loss of innocent lives but also happy that you and your family are all safe and healthy.

Have a wonderful and prosperous 2010

Sorry to hear this news. It hurts me to see this kind of thing spreading to countries like Finland. :(

I tried to find a count of mass shootings in the USA for 2009, but couldn't. I did find a count from January through April, and there were 19 mass shootings in those four months, and the number of dead was 91.

It has become so regular here, that the news doesn't shock us to the degree that it used to. The Columbine shootings about ten years ago had us talking for months. Now, a mass shooting holds our attention for a few days, if that long.

All who died were workers of the same retail store. Including his ex wife/or girlfriend. But she was found dead at home.

How sad..

Heikki, I am so glad that none of your family was out there. I am so sorry for the others families left behind to mourn. You, Suvi, and boys are our family so that gives us a sense of relief that you are safe.

I was soooo afraid that somthing had happened to my family this morning local time, but thank the good Lord nothing had and they were safe. My wife works in that direction so thats why the thought quickly came to mind. Sort of an automatic response to many here.

We are all safe Grani and at home. Thank you for your kind words and thoughts. Your our favorite Grani also. :) :) So hugs to you from all of us here.

Feelings and thoughts are sort of mixed here amongst many including us living nearby and of course throughout Finland once again, even though we are safe.

Thank You All for your kind words and thoughts.

We have no words to express the real thoughts we have going through our minds at present except to say that feeling of shock, anger, sadness, and all are combined together. Its in the back of our minds even though its supposed to be a happy occassion on New Years eve but the party feeling is just not with us this time.

For those of you that are sports fans such as Formula 1 the City of Espoo where this incident took place is the home of Kimi Räikkönen and Headquarters for Nokia Mobile Phones.

The Media sure followed this incident with priority interest and the News spread quickly throughout the world due to this reason also.

Here is a Report from the Finnish Police to the International Media about the incident. Play the video.

Now there is an investigation going on about the fact that the shooter was on the Wanted List for terrorism in Bosnia. This report has not been confirmed as of yet though.

Even though in my opinion it doesnt matter anymore since he,s gone but still.

Profile: Finland gunman

Ibrahim Shkupolli had been ordered to keep away from the Prisma store
Ibrahim Shkupolli, 43, who is accused of killing five people and then himself in a shooting rampage in the southern Finnish city of Espoo, had a chequered love life and a history of run-ins with the police.

His final act of violence was the culmination of series of confrontations with a former girlfriend.

He first dated the Finnish woman, who has not yet been named, soon after his arrival in Finland in 1990.

An ethnic Albanian from Kosovo, he had left as Yugoslavia began to break apart, but it is not clear why.

His relationship with the woman lasted for 18 years, but it was not a monogamous one.

Shkupolli was also married to a woman of Albanian background, with whom he had a family, according to Finnish media reports.

It would appear he married her after coming to Finland - and after meeting the Finnish woman, with whom he maintained a relationship throughout.

That relationship broke down for the final time last year. She went to police to complain about his behaviour and the numerous threats he had made, including one to kill her.

A court imposed a restraining order, not only preventing him from approaching her, but also the place where she worked - the Prisma grocery store in the Sello shopping centre in Espoo.

This is the same shop where, on 31 December, dressed in black, he started firing at employees.

After killing four people at the shopping centre he fled. It seems Shkupolli then killed his former girlfriend at her flat on the outskirts of the city.

Police eventually found him at his own flat, where he had apparently killed himself.

Shkupolli had a previous conviction for causing bodily harm and had twice been fined for illegal possession of a handgun, in 2003 and 2007, the Finnish state broadcaster YLE reported. He was also facing several new charges.

He had a job, in a warehousing company, organising deliveries to the Prisma shop.

But his employer did not notice anything out of the usual in his behaviour prior to the shootings, according to the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.

Heikki:

I heard news of the shooting while working on the teardrop this morning.
Funny, but my first thought was if it was near your home..........
Glad to hear you and your family are save.

Unfortunately tragic news like this now seem to fly around the world very day. Not sure if their is more violence, or the media is just getting better at broadcasting it.

Stay save ..............
