but the Shelf Road from Cripple Creek, CO to Canon City was much scarier. If you drive this road, I'd advise starting at Cripple Creek and heading south. That will put you next to the rock wall and oncoming traffic will have to hug the edge of the road and the cliff !


I've been wanting to try that route.
I don't know...going up might be a lot more fun, hugging the edge!
Last time I did Phantom canyon it was January, with snow and ice on the road. :shock:
Since I was pulling a trailer, with two wheel drive...I decided going up was probably a lot wiser than going down... ;)

Every year when we attend "The Last Gasp" at Canon City, we always go for a long drive. We take Phantom Canyon Road from Canon City to Victor and then turn around and take Shelf Road back to Canon City. Beautiful drive, never get tired of doing this every year! Maybe this year we can get a big group to come to "Last Gasp" and then everyone take this drive together, what fun!
