Yup you can see the seam in it (at least mine).

Sheet metal is broke (bent, folded, etc.) cold.
Extruded steel is formed/shaped with a hot process.
Look at that seam on the inside surface of the tubing... it's joined together, not just touching edge to edge.

...there are two types of tubing, one is extruded, no seam and VERY expensive, the other is welded up out of sheet steel in whatever thickness...it is cold rolled in a press(brake) and the seam is welded, this is what just about everyone is using, if you look it over you can see the seam and if you look up inside it you may see slag

Gage,
I certainly don't want to start an argument, but the 2" square tubing that most people here advocate using for frames is actually made from sheet metal. ;)

I aggree. But look at the HF frame. I don't believe it is square tube. Maybe I miss wrote, but I was knocking the HF frame, not square/ rectangular sheet that comes from the steel factory.
As a side note. The frame that Howard had for sale looked to be a good strong frame made from rectangular tubing. I would think it's just as strong as my 2" channel extru frame. with the advantage most likely being lighter.

And Dean, if my memory serves me right. The steel factories run flap sheet strips through either rollers or dies hot to get the shape they want and then go through a basic check & straighten before stacking. For the most part now days, brakes are only used by the fab or custom shops.

Have a good day.

No argument, just discussion. And I believe both Madjack and myself are correct with the mfg method.

...done hot or cold I don't know about for sure other than what I have seen and Gage your right it is done both ways
madjack 8)
p.s I have seen it done with a press(not brake) and dies...the point being that it is formed tube not a forged tube

The only input I can add here is that the HF 1800lb Trailer is a C-Channel design. Oh yeah, and it uses the standard Hong Kong Junk Yard Bolts (that's Harbor Freight :o )

I have had two of their bolts shear on me in my 12-Ton Press I got from there a few months ago.

5X10 is the way to go.

Build your frame and do not worry about the HF trailer falling apart.

We spent a month and a half in our tear and never got tired of being in it. Almost hated coming home, well almost. When you live in front of the beach in Mexico...

Oh yea, welcome aboard. I have never met such a good groop of guys as the folks here and Teardroppers in general.

Hi SlickJoy...or is it KillSlick....149Joy?!?!

Anyway, welcome to the list. Does this mean I have to stop running with sissors? Darn!

I'm building a 5x10 so of course I'm partial to them. There have been a couple of polls about 4x8 VS 5x10, and the larger trailer usually wins. If you are camping solo, then the 4x8 may be just fine. Camping with two in a 48 inch wide space (less because of the walls) gets a bit tight.

You are going to spend a bit of money on the trailer no matter what, so build the one you want the first time.

Take care!
Joanne

slick149 wrote:Nah....not usually. Usually telling people to stop consuming stuff for an inevitable drive home, or pointing loaded firearms in a safe direction, or to not light firecrackers in their hands...you know...."fun" stuff.

Anyways......HIYA FORUM!

I have been wanting to get a TD for a short while now. I've been lurking for a short bit, and finally decided to Register, and well.....you know the rest.

I am considering buying an HF trailer. I can get one through tomorrow for $240. It's on sale for $300, and I found an online coupon for 20% off. I just don't know yet if I want a 4x8 or a 5x10. The welding is of no concern, just the price.

I can get the HF complete for the price I will pay for an axle for the home-built.

You guys have any thoughts on this?

Oh yeah....THANKS FOR THE WELCOME  (no sarcasm intended)

Nope. Just the sainer (is that a word) of my friends. They usually think I am being a pesamist, but, I just like to keep thinking in the real world.
