Dave :?

LINUX can be run on the same machine but you would have to know what your doing to make it a dual boot. It has its own browser in it simular but not IE. Has its own version of alot of other programs also. But it is learning a whole new OS. I adapted quickly and like it cause it is open source. ( you know what it does and why.) but I am also an advanced user as I also know UNIX ,C++ and other code programs. That is what I do at work. I work in telecom and every line of equipment talks its own language. I build computers as a hobby and have 5 of them around my desk now. (Wife isn't very pleased with that.)
Anyway enough rambling. If you have an old computer around that you don't think it can run XP you should load it and play with it. It cost's next to nothing. You can find it on ebay real cheap.

I have been using Avast and AVG together along with Ad-Aware and haven't had any problems. Only thing is your PC has to have the capabilities to run both without slowing down. As for a firewall XP has one built into SP2 so that shouldn't be a problem.
I run a router and XP firewall so not much gets thru.

You don't even need to do that, a little searching and you can get most versions for free.

do a search on a program called "stng259" down load it and run it.
its a virus scan freebe from mcafee made for system admins to check and clean systems before doing upgrades. Its great for checking up on your virus scanner. I've found "nastys" that my Trend Micro virus program missed. The stng 259 is updated every now and then to keep current with the latest bad things. :)

Hey BufordT , I agree with ya that Macs are not "effected "by virus's but a Mac can still pass a virus along to Windows machines via email & doc attachments. So would it not be wise for Mac users to scan their machines to be a good user when they send mail ? Just my 2 sense is all.

That's true Boodro but I don't open attachments unless I know who they came from. I also don't send out attachments unless I know where they came from. And since mac can't run windows software I don't think I've ever sent out anything that would hurt someone else's computer.

.exe .bat I don't even know what they are anymore.

Got to thinking about this and if I was running a virus protection on the mac it'd only check for mac viruses. Not windows. Windows virus scans don't check for mac viruses.

Thanks Steve... I was in the mainframe business for 20 years and walked away from that career to become a beach bum... All my programming was in the COBOL, RPG, and FORTRAN languages. I just took 4 old PCs to the recycling center - should have kept the better of them but what the hey. In no time this new one will be outdated and become a candidate for experimentation. Meantime i'll read up on LINUX.
I've wanted to teach myself UNIX and C++ for a long time but beachbumming is a time-consuming lifestyle... especially in Missouri

Hey Bufordt,

Sorry, I've been away from the computer for 24 hours. Wasn't ignoring you.

I knew you weren't being ugly. I think you need to contact MAC and hire on as a salesman. I know how good MAC is. I just can't afford anything like that.............and besides, I'm not smart enough to figure out a MAC system. Point a click is my thing.

That's alright Chris. I knew you'd be back. Point and click. That's all I do on the mac also. Just point and click.

I've been using AVG and AdAware SE for a while now. I downloaded AVAST! this morning and while I was at it I downloaded Mozilla Firefox also. Is ir just my imagination or is Firefox that much faster than Internet Explorer? Have not looked at all the features of it yet but was impressed with the ease to install, transfer all my stuff from IE, and the speed and ease with which I can navigate around.
Good stuff!

I agree with burford t, use nothing. JUST DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS. Also I have told people who write to me that I only look at original email, nothing with forward in subject line. I dont care about every dumb joke or cute story on the internet. So far, no problems. Its worked for me for 10 years already.
