Building website

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Mike, can you link to pics easy located there from the outside? You can't with yahoo. Think I'll go in there and sign up an account. It can't hurt anything, if it's for free. :applause:

Have a good day.

Don't know about linking pictures, but isn't that what BG's website is for? Or the Album section on this forum?

Mike...

If you can post pics to a thread, you are part of the way there, posting pics to a webpage is similar. I had no idea what I was doing when I started my blog/website. I kind of learned as I went along. I learned quite a few things about websites from this message board.

All I want is for people to see my url on my business cards and be able to go to that business website containing pictures of my work. Is that something I can do with the website you recommended?

If you go to Godaddy and go into your account for your URL you will be able to point it at the first page of your site. I am pretty sure it is as simple as pasting the link address into a block. Somewhere here should be able to walk you thru it in a couple of minutes. But you will need your site set up first.

Hey Chris

Click on my www. and you will see a front page web page.
Its simple but effective.

Microsoft word is actually quite good as well and if you are good with it you can make great web pages with it.

EZ wrote:There are a lot of web page tools around. I have used some Shareware stuff and Frontpage (hated it), but the easiest and the one I use now is Microsoft Word. Not going to get anything really fancy but you probably have it, it is easy to learn and to post pics and text it is hard to beat. The most difficult part of the whole web page thing for many people is publishing it to the server. That may be remedied by an on-line tool but I am not very familiar with those. I just know what I use and it is Word. It is easy but nothing fancy. I use the tool WS_FTP Pro to publish.

Just an opinion

Chris,
If you're anything like me and don't know squat about HTML, then a program like FrontPage, which writes it's own HTML could be a way to go.
I have FrontPage and built a website for my business with it and I'll tell yaa... It was one of the most frustrating projects I ever took on.
I've been told that Dream Weaver is a much easier and friendly program to use.
With the task at hand of putting a website together for the up coming '06 IRG, I was dreading the thought of building another site. I really didn't want to spend the money on Dream Weaver and I made a few attempts with FrontPage and quickly decided that there must be an easier way.
I posted the question right here on this forum and Will Smith suggested that I give NVUE (Pronounced N-view for a "new view") a try. It's a free downloadable program. I got stuck a few times at first, but they also have a phpbb forum for help. Building the Pamplin Grove site has been a very fun undertaking to say the least! I recommend that you at least give NVUE a looksee...

Dean,

Dreamweaver is really great! Most folks don't want to spend the money for it, though! Couple hundred bucks or more! But, if you are using it for a business website, it probably is worth it.

I couldn't find NVUE, but did find NVU. Here's a link for anyone interested: http://www.nvu.com/

Chris,

Try doing a google search on "Free web templates" There are prebuilt websites out there that you can download and modify to meet you individual needs. Just a suggestion. :)

I use FrontPage for my website http://duffyscavern.org. It works very well for my needs and I do not find it hard to work with but my site is rather simple.
One note about FP, you may have a problem if your ISP does not support FP and use their extensions. Not all ISP's do and at one time it was hard to find those that do. If you need one that does, I use Ipower for about $100 a year. It may be listed under Ipowerweb.com. They have their own software to build your site that is free. My site was already built so I stayed with FP. I used one of the free websites that inserted ads. The ads were not a big problem but the support was terrible so I switched to pay as you go.
I update my pages almost once a week with little effort.
Good luck
Dennis

that tends to be the problem with front page... they use a lot of microsoft specific "web-bots" to do some of their neat functionality. if your doing this for business, not everyone might see all items if they are using different browsers. i use it myself to quickly setup a site (one example, www.typ3kultur.com) and then tweak the code myself.

i looked at the site you mention and it is relatively simple. if you need any front page coaching or would like me to quickly get your basic framework up for you just give me a hollar.

as for the url, you need to contact the registrar where you got the domain name, usually they have a control panel, and you can edit where to direct the url. it would then take a day or two to propogate through the system.[/url]
