Bear Attack.

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Juneaudave » Sat Apr 15, 2006 2:28 pm

We get garbage bears in the yard all the time during the summer, even with bear proof garbage cans and no bird feeders...they love the seed.

In my youth, I was managing a condo complex with big dumpsters. Everynight, a big black bear would crawl in the dumpster and make a big mess. I finally decided I would sleep in my Subaru parked next to the dumpster, and when the bear came and crawled in, would toss a M-80 firecracker into the dumpster and scare him off for good.

All went well, late at night I woke up with the noise of the bear getting into the dumpster

....I rolled down the window of the Subaru very quietly

...lit the M-80

...and a stupid cat jumped into the Subaru's window scaring the crap out of me and causing me to drop the M-80 in the passenger seat.

Needless to say, I couldn't hear for a week, the passenger seat was blasted to shreds...and the bear and the cat were never seen again.

i grew up in west virginia and had my first bear experience when i was 10,
there were 5 or 6 of us camping at the mouth of a cave under a rock cliff overhang and were visited by a black bear,
somebody woke up and said he was moving around the tree we had hoisted our food up in, we all started throwing rocks and it didnt take but a few good strikes to send him runing up a tree, i learned then that they (black bears) arent the most dangerous to deal with, the cave became known as "bears den" and is still today, i killed 5 or 6 by the time i left the state at the age of 15, i think i shot my first one at 11 or 12,
the real danger was mountain lions, they will kill your ass, i think they are supposed to be extint but ive heard there not, the bears still come down to my dads house and get in the trash cans, the last time i was home he said he had "rocked" one out of his yard the previous week,

I've often wondered why we teach boys to scream and fight and girls to give in and be nice when confronted with human predators -- and I think the advice above on how to confront bears is probably a similar situation. Don't get between any wild mom and its babies, don't act or smell like food, and don't be helpless.

Through all my backpacking years and hikes and training courses, you only curl up on a Grizzly. All others you make noise, get into a group, make yourself look as big as possible, and if it comes down to it you fight back.
Bears will make fake charges at you also, standing your ground and fighting back is what I have always been taught, except with a Grizz.

I have been hiking and tent camping most of my life. I have had bears come into camp in the ADK's while preparing food. Usually making noise scares them away. The two times they did not go away I didnt stick around. We ran about 70yrds. The bears left about 3mins later.

My old scoutmaster told us, (like Joeseph said) "You don't have to outrun the bear...just the others with you." We had these plywood patrol boxes to store food and cooking supplies. The bears wood knock them over, but never got in them. Squirls and chipmunks did though. I have had black bears bump into our tents at night. TD's are not bearproof. I'm sure you may have seen the videos of brown bears tearing car doors off to get into cars at Yellowstone.

Just a thought... you could pour a lot of bacon grease around the Class A trailer down the way (the one blasting the radio) and wait for the fun to begin.

After cooking everything has to be spotless. Thats why I have a minimal galley and cook on the stove on the picknick table.

I just got in from a camp trip this evening and there were some bear in my area. I keep a loaded 870 shotgun handy with 00 Buck and insure the food stuffs are put away.

All garabage is put in a trash bag and put in our JEEP for the night. Handguns will just p*ss the bear off and not recommended. Mostly they don't like noise, so make lots of it. When you're all a sleep for the night and the bears come into your camp, you just have to be quiet and see what they do.....................!

Picture this. (Cause I can't draw) There is Miriam (my name to protect the truly innocent) lying on the ground, 870 stuck to her shoulder---shoulder embeded in the ground.

The poor bear, on the ground -----------------------dying from laughter.

Now I ask you: Is this animal abuse?

Now I am sure the good ol boys here abouts had a good laugh. I am wondering if I hit a bear with 00 buck, if he is going to have fun putting that shotgun where ever he wants.

Truth is the food is done, the house is clean and I have nothing better to do than inflict my humor on the rest of you.

Happy Holliday.

If you stand your ground, and hit him with oo buck from 10-15 feet away all he's gonna do is die.
I know its the photographer, and not the camera. I'll keep shooting with a Pentax. Just in case.

Animal abuse? Image

You got it Slayer. He's going to be seriously wounded (possibly dead) and pissed off and hopefully give us campers enough time to get to the JEEP.

Holy crap! I had an ash can blow off prematurely near my hand (when throwing it), but an M-80 is A LOT more powerful!

1/4 stick dynamite? 1/8 stick?
Here we go again!

I personally had only one bear in the campground alert on the Skyline Drive in VA, but my parents told me of several incidents they witnessed.

While in Yellowstone, they watched a family leave in their car, leaving a metal cooler with food on the table. Then, they watched a bear demolish the cooler and eat the food. They weren't about to try to stop the bear. Then, one morning, they found bear paw prints on the side of their trailer, about head high (their heads, not the bear's).

Another time, in NC, they heard a woman scream nearby. Dad rushed over in time to see a bear heading for the trees with a loaf of bread he appropriated from the table where the woman was preparing a meal.
