I used to ride with one of those orange flags sticking up in the air......

After thinking about it, I cut it down to 4 feet long and it now sticks out to the left side of my recumbent (I always ride on the right). It is amazing how much clearance people will give that flapping flag that they did not give me.

In the above article, I'm not sure anything would have helped.... 4 wheel drivers make bicycling a dangerous sport.... they are supposed to 'share the road',.... ha...... bicycles are inconveniences to the average driver....

No kidding, arnereil. I used to do Century races each year. I'd put about 3,000 miles a season on the road getting ready, and many of those miles were early in the morning in the dark. So everything I could apply reflective tape to was covered. My pedal backs, my bike, flashing red LED light under the seat, reflective patches on my shoes (going up and down and up and down), reflective bands around my ankles, reflective patches on my helmet. And with all that, you'd think any driver could see me..................but on more than one ocassion I was very nearly hit. I've been screamed at and cussed at for using the road. I've had bottles thrown at me and unfinished hamburgers. It's a well documented fact people in automobiles disrespect motorcycle riders, but little known is they respect bicycle riders even less. It's a shame, because with the increasing gasoline prices there'll be more two-wheelers out there, that's for sure!

The tension between what is good enough and what is beyond that creates the space for character to become our work.

There are many roads where I wouldn't feel safe riding a bike. Fortunately there is a bike path almost all the way from my home to my work. I also use a bright flashing LED tail light, a good headlight and a large rear view mirror. When I have to go somewhere without bike paths I usually take the motorcycle.

Want electric power, but not too many wheels? Think a Segway is too big? You need a (self-balancing) Electric Unicycle:

And yes, of course, that's at BurningMan - I've never been but I recognise the loonies when I see 'em.
