I'm glad to know that those around me do carry, though. Keeps the criminals guessing and in every state I am aware of, the violent crime rate drops after CCW goes into effect.

Now if I could pack a longbow... :D

I would have thought so but you may be surprised if you look at the numbers. Yes, Japan is low but there are developed countries that have a higher murder rate than the US. The sobering fact is that Iran has a lower murder rate than the US.

It is difficult to legally own a handgun in Oz, can be done but to just go purchase one is virtually impossible.
I owned a .22 rifle(s) for many years, it was more part of the tool box than seen as a weapon.
Some places I found myself were a bit remote and a rifle was just part of the survival kit. Never a toy.
You can buy a rifle but there is a bit of a procedure attached to it. It is not a simple over the counter purchase.
I have no need these days.

As good ole Sam C. said: "Lies, damn lies, and statistics". It might be how "murder" is defined. If suicides are included then the results would change dramatically. Maybe countries define and report "murders" differently. Japan has nearly twice the suicide rate of the US. So, to come to the right conclusion maybe you have to look a bit deeper.

The opinions in this post are my own. My comments are directed to those that might like an alternative approach to those already espoused. There is the right way,the wrong way,the USMC way, your way, my way, and the highway.

I always told my wife if I was gonna keep a gun for home defense, it would be a very illegal .410 mounted on a black powder pistol stock and loaded with #7...just stick the barrel down the hall and cut loose.

My father was a forensic psychiatrist with an interest in homicide and he reckoned one of the biggest safety measures in Britain was the introduction of central heating systems in the 1950s and 1960s. Up until then an open coal fire was the most common form of heating and to work the fire you needed a poker - which also was not only an effective murder weapon but also was stored close at hand where couples argued. Removing the fires that needed a poker meant that one spouse had to go out to the kitchen to get a knife to attack the other spouse and in that time they would likely come to their senses and calm down.

take the gang bangers (teens to early twenties) out of the gun deaths and the rate isn't so crazy in the US, and since homeboys like to randomly spray while holding the gun sideways (looks cooler after all, just like the waistband at the knees makes you look cooler, but really slows you down running from the cops) they tend to hit random people rather than their target(s).
Possession of an unliscnesed fire arm in MA is a min. mandatory 1 year in jail, gang bangers started having one guy carry the gun and another the ammo which allowed the whiney scum (lawyers) to plead bargain the gun charges down. so they made each round of ammo on an unliscensed person a felony, (and here's the important part) then they enforced it hard. this worked to get the gang bangers away from the cities that wanted too. (that and an unusually high rate of arson in crack houses, when the one down the street from where I live now burned, the cops showed up and didn't let the fire dept. in for quite a while). Of course now we have a criminal defense lawyer as governor so crime is safe.....

Jeepers, how many years away from this forum and I start off with this thread. Cool!!!

Just like the good ole days!

I missed you folks. I will try to be on guard to not allow my intense desire to design and build another camper to get me sucked into this forum night and day and day and night.

Oh by the way yes. Bersa Thunder .380 :D

Welcome back EZ, I have to complement everyone for having a civil discussion about a hot topic in the off topic area. Welcome to Biziedzie as well, looks like in less than 90 days you have posted over 400 times, Hope you enjoy camping and the great outdoors, because the way you keep joining in this thread, the word trolling comes to mind. Cell phones can be deadly, From Teens Texting and attempting to drive to insurgents blowing up people using them to detonate and IED. The Sheepdog, Sheeple and Wolves is a great thing to read. In the USA the large cities are cesspools of crime, poverty and entitlement. Thugs will kill you for your jacket, tennis shoes, or the latest electronic gadget, And not even give it a second thought. Too bad it has come to this but it has, and we could place blame and have 14 page discussions about how this happened. I am from the Peoples republic of Illinois were the politicians and governers serve 2 terms, One in office and one in Jail. The only state that has yet to allow it's citizens to protect them selves from all who do not seem to have the will to work for what they want. If I could I certainly would and realize that with that comes great responsibility, Really too bad it has come to this. I am a proud supporter on our great second amendment and a NRA member. I have read that During WW2 a High ranking Jap, while discussing a mainland invasion of the US said, and I am not certain of the exact quote but that they can expect to find an armed person behind every blade of grass. An invasion was never attempted. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Enjoy the great outdoors, that is what we all have in common. Bill

WildBill,

Your quote was accurate, and was made by Admiral Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and a man very familiar with the United States. He was quite correct. When I was younger, I knew several men who were patrolling the southern Oregon beaches in the frantic days immediately after Pearl Harbor, until the military got organized enough to replace them. This area of the country was still fairly remote in those days, with spotty electrical service, and even fewer telephones, so foot patrol by civilians was a necessary stop gap.

some of the tools I inherited from my dad were also purchased and used to defend the coasts of ME in WWII, as the Uboats were off the coast and there were people supplying them. ME has one of the longest coastlines of any state in the lower 48, and thanks to that and the fog banks it was a favorite spot for confederate raiders and Uboats, our coast guard never really got their arms around it all even with radar, aircraft, blimps, and coast watchers. One time they sank a Uboat off the MA coast and had bread bags from a bakery in MA come up with the debris. The locals were told to buy guns to keep the Germans slowed down until the Army could get there.
