I am thinking for me a v-6 or even a 4 banger would be just fine,, some of the old Datsuns have an independent rear suspension that can be easily dropped and used, something like a 240-Z,, 6cyl, trans and rear ,, makes it less complicated in fitting parts together

If you use the rear end out of a 240-280 z then make sure you completely rebuild it. I found out by spending a couple of days in Battle Mountain, Nevada with a 260z who's rear end had seized up that those were a problem with the early Zs. Oh and Battle Mountain is not as fun of place as the name might imply. I'm thinking along the lines of a v6 or 4 banger also.

I tried a Boss Hog once with the 350 chevy but found the bike to be less than rider friendly around town. I like the v-twin bikes for cruising. Seems to be the right amount of power for a big guy like me without wasting anything.

You bet ! I have a 2004 Heritage softail. It has 30,000 on it. After this summer it will have a lot more. Three of us are taking a month to go around the U.S. I have been wanting to do this for years.
I'm going to ret. from my job in April and this will be my ret. ride. Then soon after that I will probably get another job.

I've ridden bikes since 1970. I started with a Maverick Mini-Trail minibike (similar to the Honda Mini, but with a 2 stroke engine, 4 spd. gears and a manual clutch). Then a couple Yammy Enduros, a Yammy RD400 in 1976 (the pocket rocket!).
I had a couple Honda road bikes, then a 1982 Yamaha Virago 750. I loved that bike - kept it for 13 years! Got a 1991 Suzuki VX800 in 1995, and kept it for 10 years. Rode it to Boston & back (1100 miles) in 1999, and averaged 60 miles per gallon!
I picked up a 1997 Suzuki Savage last fall. Not a fast bike, but I like its simplicity - one cylinder, one carb, air cooled, low seat. Good for a beginner or an old guy like me!
I also have two vintage Hondas - a 1962 Honda 50 (remember "The Nicest People" ads?), and a 1975 CB360. Fun bikes!
I taught the MSF Rider Safety Course for 20 years. One of my sons is an instructor now.

I am like most of you guys. I started at 15 ,on a Motabecane Moped. Been riding mainly Hondas thru the years. I have owned about 15 of them thru the years. I am currently down to 4 Hondas. I ride a Shadow now also have a fully restored 72 CL350 Scrambler, It looks new. I have 2 Honda Express mopeds for my wife and the grandkids.
I ride a lot with several Vetrans groups, mainly poker runs. Not the hardcore type. My butt gets too sore after a few hundred miles.

I've had many bikes over the years but my 'stable' seems to have 'stabilized' with just the '79 CBX for the street and a KLR 250 for the trails - Haven't found anything I'd trade either of those for and justifying a 3rd bike might be . . . . suicide

43 yrs old and just started riding in August and love it. Started with a Rebel and moved up to a 750 Shadow Aero after six weeks.

It's fun to learn new stuff during mid-life.

I started riding in the early 70's on a 1969 Honda Mini Trail 50. Rode dirt bikes for a while, had a Yamaha RD 350 while in college, and bought my First Harley (a Softtail) in 1985. Was riding about 20,000 miles a year in the 90's but haven't had a bike out in about 8 years. My Rat 1985 FLHT has about 70,000 miles on it, and I have ridden it in 46 states, including Alaska.

I also currently have a 47 Indian Chief in the garage, waiting for me to get the time and $$$ to finish restoring it, and a 63 stroker panhead in pieces in the basement. Got a couple of other bikes including a Suzuki RE5, and a 74 Rickman/Motessa motorcrosser.

Every year I tell myself that I need to get one of the Harleys back on the road, but never seem to find the time. With fuel prices so high, and a 30 mile round trip to work, maybe this will be the year.

Back before I got married I bought a Yamaha 650 Special. What a great bike! But I never rode it much after I got married, and then kids came along. I sold it because we needed some money and regretted it every spring when the bikes started riding around town. I always wanted another bike. Two years ago I came across a V-Star 650 CLassic with everything on it that I would want for a good price. It's not a big bike motor-wise but it cruises nicely around town and looks good, too. And it's the same color that my old bike was! Keep the wheels on the road and watch out for the other guy! I can't wait for the snow to melt and spring to get here!

Started riding around 10-12 on a Yamaha Trial 90?, would ride brothers Honda 50. Just recently (last September) rode with my older brother to pick up his new Kawasaki 900 they had a 1986 Honda Helix 250cc scooter. Went back and bought it the next day. Funny I hadn't been on 2 wheels in years and I still reach for the clutch on the scooter(automatic). I have a hard time getting used to being able to go for a 60 mile ride and only use a gallon of gas. If I use the scooter enough, might upgrade to a motorcycle in a few years.
