The next day I took my truck (Chevy 4x4 that tows TD) bright and early on Sunday and the crew at the wood lot loaded it up, very nicely for me. I asked them not to go above the bed, and they did a GREAT job of loading it. My plan was to take this load up to my home in the mountains (just an hour +) away from the coast. So, I'm bopping along and get on the 299 highway when a SUV pulls up beside me and frantically signs me to roll down my window. He yells that my tire is smoking!! I pull over as soon as I can to check it out, and sure enough there is LOTS of smoke coming off it, but I can tell by the smell it is metal, and not the tire. One of the last exits is coming up, so I pull over there to a grocery store, same place that I went the day before for Dean's Christmas party at the bowling alley next door.
When I went in the market let me make phone calls to AAA, where they dispatched a truck to come get me. In the meantime, the dog has accidentally pushed the button, locking himself, and my keys inside. So I waited around for the truck and when he arrived he unlocked me, but said he can't tow the truck cuz the wood in the back qualifies it as a commercial tow. I can dump the wood out, unloading myself, and then he will tow it, or I can have him call for a com tow @ $125.00 an hour, and he figures it will probably take about 2 hours. I know if I dump the wood it won't be there when I return, so I got my twin brother to go to the lot in town and pick up the rest of the cord while I get the com tow to take me in to town. It got towed to the place where I had just had the brakes fixed/replaced the month before....(tow = $185.00) and got the brakes checked and fixed for free as they were still under warranty. Now I've got wood stashed all over the place, and part of the cord where I originally wanted all of it to go. So, that's my tale.
Next year I think I will find someone in the hills who will cut a cord, split and deliver it for me. I will spend time cutting up the big hunks of wood I already have there with my new chain saw. Tried it out last time and have a limit of about a half hour before I call "uncle" and get a sore shoulder. TDN

Hello threadies!![]()
Cold and rainy at the doghouse. I'm fine with that. The primary lake my town draws water from is only 5 feet low, which is much better than the 16 feet low it was on January 1.
I just put my tow vehicle up for sale. I will miss it terribly, but my extended warranty is running out, and the cost to extend it more is just too high. Owning a twin turbo, all wheel drive, height-adjustable air suspension vehicle with no warranty is just too risky. My dad made me a killer offer on his (boring) Volvo XC-70. So, it looks like I'll be a 50-year-old Volvo driver.![]()
The silver lining is that the car he is buying is badass. I call first dibs when he sells it.![]()
My dad is buying this car as an 80th birthday present to himself. I've been encouraging him to go balls out. He is still a very capable driver, but that can change, so my advice to him is go for the gold on this car. It is entirely possible this could be his last car, so go ahead and get that loaded, Supercharged Audi A6. Spend some of my inheritance on the kind of car you've always wanted.
My dad is a very frugal millionaire. But, every now and then, he listens to me, the art major. He bought the boat I told him to buy, and LOVED it. He has been borrowing my cars to go to the store for years, when I visit, because "they were parked behind his car."
He's been talking to me on a regular basis on this new car, since I know cars. I love how he is actually being a little bit like me. His hidden caseydog is coming out.![]()
My dad is old. My wish for him is to live well until he dies. That's what I hope everyone does, whether they live to 80, 100, or only to 40. Live well until you die.
