    Hi Jeff,
Don't know much about biology, as the song goes, but it seems that I was surrounded by environmental biologists of all sorts for awhile. A couple of the most financially successful worked for companies that do environmental surveys, monitoring and compliance. State & federal government, oil, mining and other resource companies pay the bill.
And just have to say, consider Alaska. It's a part of this country that's doing well and has opportunity for those that strive. Good luck.
    :peace: Fred

I would LOVE. To move to Alaska, but so far nobody seems interested. The only response we got was from a University in Fairbanks that offered an unpaid internship to reduce the cost of graduate school. We considered it, but the temperature of the conversation became a little chilly when they found out Laurie was married and couldn't be housed in a dorm room.

    Hi Jeff,
I should clarify that by suggesting environmental biology, I didn't mean just in Alaska, but anywhere.
Since you're considering Alaska, the Fairbanks area is a wonderful place to live and has some of the best opportunities for work in Alaska.
Laurie shouldn't give up on the university. I do know that it's a tough nut to crack from the outside because of small college politics. It's a matter of finding the way in through your networking. I would think that UAF would be a biologists dream; fisheries school, mining school, cold climate research and a leader in arctic climate change research.
Other places in Fairbanks that employ biologist directly or through a service are the headquarters for; two national parks, interior state fish & game, the Alaska pipeline, mining companies, BLM, a state fishery, an Air Force base & an Army base, to name some. It's a small town, but it has a lot going on in terms of work, culture and recreation.
Alaska Biological Research (ABR) is the company that I'm most familiar with through friends that work there. ABR has positions available listed here: http://www.abrinc.com/employment/ Even if those jobs aren't right, the employment director would surely have a pulse on area work along those lines.
And for you, Jeff, Fairbanks is the center of transportation (railroad, air & truck) for northern interior Alaska. State job site: http://jobs.alaska.gov/

Laurie, you sound like just my kind of girl. The fastest way for anyone to get me to do anything is to tell me that I can't. I'll either prove them wrong or go down trying my hardest.

Sometimes just formulating a plan can give you the boost of energy you need to put you over that hurdle.

You have gotten some excellent suggestions here. Taking an entry level position in the company you would most want to work for is an excellent suggestion. I have worked for many employers who open all jobs up internally first and then only post them for outsiders if they are unable to fill them from within.

Teaching may turn out to be a stepping stone (and a great way to get assistance with tuition for getting an advanced degree) but it may just turn out to be something you fall in love with. My husband had only had two kinds of jobs prior to becoming a teacher, police officer and then the military. HIs bachelor's was in criminal justice and he had dreamed for years of going to law school. There was absolutely nothing in his background, history or personality that would have led me to think he would love teaching and working with kids. But he prays for his kids every day, asks God to lead him to the kids that most need him and show him how he can help them (he is principal of an alternative school) and he gets so much reward out of what he does. Subbing, as suggested, is an excellent way to get your foot in the door.

We wish you the very best with whatever your new path is, and whether or not it is exactly what you want, I hope it is exactly what you need until you get exactly what you want.

Laurie with the post graduate see if the school will let you work in the biology labs or sometimes the professors will need a Lab assistant and that will be a paying job to help defray your own school costs. my friend Shanna started off as a lab assistant then this year is a full time lab teacher with the new biology students. She subs at the local High School 2 days a week teaching lots of different classes. If you decide to move3 check out the possibilities for full time job in your future city.
Lisa another friend just told me about a DNA Lab opening here, 53 miles from me, one of her coworkers will be going to CDC next month will be working with the DNA of pigs with disease???? Keep up your spirits and know that with education, the jobs will come only you may have to move. but get the education first!!! Good Luck

Laurie put in a resume with Saint Gobain Corporation for a management position. They are a giant corporation that has a toe in a lot of different aspects of chemistry and biology all over the world. the ad seemed to have been written for Laurie's skill set. They wanted an experianced manager with Inventory, and HR experiance, as well as experiance in finance to check up on AP and AR departments, and sufucciant education in biology or chemistry to oversee lab operations.
For 3 years Laurie worked for a minor competitor of theirs 10 years ago doing AP, AR, payroll, and inventory control, and her first degree was a tech school degree in finance and accounting. The job description sounds like it was written specifically for her. Keep fingers crossed please, and if anyone has any pull with Saint Gobain, any good word would help.
thanks y'all
