Six riders showed for a good 22 mile ride. With the wind at 6 and new aero bars I averaged 18.4 at the first stop. About 5 miles remaining Tom stated, "you seem to have more stamina than us". Momentary pause and I replied "no...Tom I have more air in my tires". Tom looked down and saw his rear tire spinning at half mast, giggling I pulled away. Undeterred Tom kept closing the gap. With .5 miles remaining, headwind, run flat tires, floppy shirt, and the ball cap under his helmet, Sir Thomas dropped the hammer with an eye on the finish and secured first ahead of the gang.

Overall average was 17.8 in a mix of hills and flats. I'll assault my third century on Saturday with an eye on breaking 7 hours.

Third Century in 14 days

Set off at 8:45 am and headed north, sky gray and holding upper forties. 18 miles later rolled into Discovery Park looking for my drafting buddy. Checked text and no show, another solo run. 32 miles I looked up and saw a 5'4" lady pushing 275-300 struggling one foot forward - repeat. Feeling the love and inspired by her grit, while still tucked reached palm out. She looked up and without hesitation, high five while I rolled a 17 average.

Crossed the bridge and rode along Lake Natomas, water smooth confirming the only wind was my movement and carried enough speed to hear the spokes sing. Easy coasting gave way to climb and third time was the charm. One gear higher than before and former pumping surrenders to cadence while repeatedly swapping positions with a half pint on a mountain ride. The turnaround showed 3:23:27 on the clock and average dropped to 14.8. No worries, the pain of going up is rewarded on the down. During the break refueled & hydrated while admiring lugged steel. The pilot was an old Asian guy kitted with a plaid woolen shirt, trousers tucked into socks and mittens to keep warm - out for his daily.

Stepped off and continued the mission. 4 hours + showing 60 miles and knew a personal best was available if I wanted it. Clouds parted and radiant heat warmed the gloves. Hit the wall at 72 and forced a 15 minute break, adjusted the aero's, recovered and finished the trail averaging 15.4. Back into traffic with eighteen to go and a headwind saying sorry but you have to work for it....I replied with keeping the average arrow pointing forward, head down and tucked. The remaining miles ticked over every 4 minutes and cracked a warm smile when the bike brain showed 100.9....31 minutes 8 seconds faster than my previous rides.

mk10108 - Great job with the century and even better by beating your best time by sooooo much!!!!!

I have only done a century on my rollers in the basement during the winter. When it gets really nice out, I usually have way too many things to do outside to take the time to do a century. I will have to do one this year. I may try to do it on a railroad trail that is about 30 miles from me. Thanks for the inspiration and the pictures.

We are back from another group ride. 32 miles.

It was supposed to be a moderate ride, as well as a slower ride. We had about a dozen people that were going to do the moderate ride. Among them were friends that we ride a bit with on another tandem. Also with us were some who are known to use people.. to sit in and not do any work.. then attack. Some times they behave sometimes not. We also had some we had not ridden with.

So we start the ride with the two tandems at the front. We are switching off some with the other tandem, but end up pulling most of the time ourselves. Because it is a moderate ride, and there are people I don't know.. we keep it pretty steady, and not to fast. We still dropped some people. So we stop at the next intersection and wait. Laurie gives the group some pointers on riding with tandems in a group. She also mentioned a good way to piss us off is to let us pull for miles then attack.

One of the people that we dropped, decided to drop back to the slower group [part of the ride we were going the same route]. We pull for about another 5 miles.. and in the middle of a hill.. where we had backed off for the others.. they went flying by like we were sitting still.... :x :x

So I sat up and took it easy. For quite a few miles.. we stayed off the back, not sitting on others wheels, but not giving any free rides either.

The ride was becoming slower than I wanted.. so we attacked a couple of times...at times we could get away.. and some not. Sometimes the other tandem would tow them up to us. A couple of the "users" are strong enough, I was not confident of just riding them off our wheel. So we had to actually attack. Which is harder to do on a tandem, we don't accelerate so well.

Once again at the back.. about 10 miles from the end of the ride, we attacked again... and actually passed the pack, going over a little knoll. I was hoping the other tandem would get away with us, but they were not able. I knew the two bikes could stay out and away from the group. With us allone and, one of the tandems still with them, made if much iffier.

So away we went. Steadily pulling away. We did have a decent head wind.. and a semi tough 1/2 mile hill ahead. I was not sure we could stay away. Laurie has also had a cold, and was coughing pretty heavily. I don't attack the hill very strongly.. I wanted to save my wife, for the last few miles. Halfway up the hill I have her glance back..and there is no one in site. We steadily grind away.. up the hill and into the wind. Towards the top.. I have her look again, and she sees at least 1 bike. :o Of course they still have the hill to climb.. :D

At the top of the hill it is flat and open.. so a bit of wind. We then start a gradual downhill, then it gets steeper with a short steep uphill on the otherside.

"Is the other tandem coming?" At the top of that next hill, I have Laurie look back again.. and she sees nothing.

We keep the hammer down.... and pedal with a fairly decent intensity. It is gently rolling now, till the finish.

We make it back alone. I get the bike taken care of in the van.. and my shoes and helmet off... before we see bikes in the distance. I make sure to make myself look comfortable before they arrive.. :D

One of the guys said he almost caught me.. he thought perhaps within a 1/4 mile. I did not say a word... With us climbing and him before gets to the hill of course will close some ground. and one we get over the top.. and he is still climbing.. we pull away again.. [idiot] He never even saw us again until the parking lot...
One of the others.. when finally taking a pull mentioned it got windy...Yeah well it was windy all day, you have just been sitting in all day..

The interesting thing.. I did not teach them anything.. they loved the ride..

Ahh...the politics of group riding mirrors life. 10% pull, 80% show just to be in the pack and 10 % suck the energy out of everyone for a short sprint to a false finish.

I enjoy how a pack maneuvers, who contributes and shares the pain. What I know about riding fills a thimble but can say if you don't have the pistons to close the gap, you yield to the top dogs. I also would invite the the moocher back next week and and repeat the embarrassment. He'll either get with the program and become a contributing pack member or find a new group to impress.

a tandem does complicate it even more so..

some people are in slightly over their heads.. and I am perfectly ok.. with them not pulling... a lot of it, for me anyways.. depends on the ride.. each ride is different.

A race group I used to belong to.. did not wait for anyone.. it was balls to the wall all the time. If you got a flat.. you were on your own.. if you could not keep... up the same. Again there was some.. that it was all they could do to hang on at all. One.. who saved himself for the biggest hill most of the way through the ride. Otherwise most did their part.. and we fairly constantly attacked one another. If we had worked more as a team, we could have had faster averages.. but that was not this ride. I did love it.

Years later with a variation of this ride, me now on a tandem, but still fit... we would pull the whole 40 mile ride. Some of the guys felt bad. I did not care.. If I [we] were going fast enough..[for them] I was happy pulling.

Some would pull out and want to beat me up that later big hill.. once ahead they would try to beat me back... I would catch and pass them on the downside.. and ride in alone. After a few times of that.. if they had the need to go to the top fast.. they would wait for me at the top.

Some people are just fn morons. Last year.. on a moderate ride [one that ended up faster] there was a new person.. new to the area.. and of course new to the ride.. he did not know anyone. He was sitting in a lot... which is perhaps what I would do on a new ride.. sit back and observe.. anyways.. there was this short steep little rise.. and he pulls out, and attacks.. and is immediately dropped.. :?

if you are that close to your limit.. why the heck attack????

If the guys today.. want to continue to ride that way.. I am cool with it.. I just won't get out and pull for 10 miles at a time.. Or at least not hold back.. and try to ride them off my wheel... :D

Sometimes trouble comes quite innocently. A few years ago on another fast training ride. Again with new people.. racers from "away" that are working here for the summer. The ride is steady but nothing to agressive. There is a usual stopping area about 1/2 through a 40 miler. It is some of the guys pee stop. Well as we are getting back on our bikes to go, one of the new guys says I am going to pee..don't worry I will bridge up.

To me.. it sounded pretty innocent.. he was judging from the pace we had been going.. and he thought he could catch up. Weeeel some of the guys took his statement as being quite cocky. [Even my wife] The guys at the front said.. NFW he is going to bridge up.. wow wow wow.. I am not sure I have ever ridden that fast... :? :? :?

"don't worry I will bridge up" is a common repeat phrase.. :rofl2: :rofl2:

or the local college team racer.. who is now and forever known as cookie [short for cookie boy] Jim who used to ride with us and was an absolute animal.. had planned the days ride.. a nice 40 miler.. well at mile 40... they are still biking away from the shop... :o

Some have paced themselves for 40... and have brought food and water for only 40.. so they stop at a store to refuel.. and Paul [a co-worker and another amazing racer.. he well turn 53 in a month.. and not only is he good for his age group.. he is good period.] Well anyways.. Paul offers said college student a cookie.. and the guys says that's ok, you look like you need it more than me!!!!! That's all it took. They about killed him the rest of the ride...
