I will probably add the stride cycle back into my exercise, but likely as a bike, rather than an eliptical. Thirty minutes of that was making my knees unhappy.
The best part? whenever this hybrid becomes junk (the time IS coming) I can get a better unit for the money by not fooling with dual purpose machines.
Keep up the great work, guys.

I am not doing much resistance training lately.. :(

yesterday I felt like I was coming down with a cold, and at ride time the weather was fairly nasty... with storms coming through.. lots of wind and rain. My riding partners bailed, and we ended up doing the same.

Today at work.. I was not feeling so hot either.. I sort of wanted to go home and go to bed.. but also did not want to miss another ride.

Tuesday we have a regular group ride, with two groups. One slower, one faster. I figured we could go out and do the slower ride. Matt talked me into doing the faster.

A few miles into it.. we headed to the front. Our other tandem friends were on single bikes, Greg with us, and Judy with the slower group. Greg took a couple of short pulls for us [which is a huge help] but for the most part it was us up front. We steadily increased the pace... I was not sure how I would get back.. but was feeling ok so far.

At our first turn.. we stopped to regroup [we had lost a few]. Our ave. was 21.9 :D

We had had kind of a side wind.. it hurt us some heading out... but was worse coming back. On occation on longer gradual hills Greg would pull, and on occation on very short little rises.. he would just push us.

Towards the end.. one guy tried to get away.. He got out there a little ways.. but we fairly easily reeled him back in. A short time later he tried pulling for us.. but he was not steady.. he would surge.. we would work to get the tandem up to speed [it is a lot of mass to accelerate ] and he would be slowing down..

We passed him on an uphill...

We got back with an ave. of 21.5 Our fastest if the season, and perhaps faster than we did all last season.

last year we did have one of the Tuesday night rides.. start with everyone together. and at about 8 miles into it we split. From there on the fast group cranked.. are overall ave. might have been in the 20-21 ave. but the fast part.. was a faster than tonight.

I know work is over rated, but it keeps me going. I have a sprint tri this weekend and work hasn't allowed me to swim at all in 6 weeks. Holy cow was I bad. It took my 30 minutes to swim a little over half a mile. That and my breathing was terrible. Oh well, I will see how it goes.

May have to swim again tonight since rain is in the forecast for the next few days.

good luck..

As a child, and young teen I used to swim a bit. My mother was the waterfront director at a summer camp. Other than just dubbing around in the water, I have not really swan any distance since.

In the last few years I have swam laps a couple of times. Wow!! did it hurt. What surprised me the most was how tired my hands got..

.6 mile swim again tonight, and in about 22 minutes. I still don't feel good in the water like I did when I was swimming about everyday.

I hope it worked out for others to work out some.

In the summer between 5th and 6th grade I had access to a free pool, and spent almost all my time in it. (don't know how, thirty mins in the sun burns my red haired hide now) mostly I used an overhand stroke (like a crawl but without my head in the water)
Six weeks into the sixth grade they gave us an initial fitness test.
I failed every test EXCEPT pull ups, which I aced with fifteen (ten was considered excellent)
I was placed in remedial phys ed with coach Guass, a retired Marine (there isn't any such thing as an EX Marine)
Man, did he kick our butts! Man, was I surprised to start getting lumpy! (muscles) Man, was he surprised to see me deliberately fail the next time through!
When he asked why, I took off my T shirt and bulged a few muscles at him. "I want more of these." He began my education in weight training, working with me on his own time after school.
Thanks, coach!

I did not post yesterday because I'm working some crazy hours, and was too tired, but did do my twenty min walk and resistance.
Jeanne did two sets for thirty mins total.

Tonight I did a thirty min ride on the bike. I've been suffering an allergy assault (attacks don't last 24+ hours) so didn't want to go out to walk.
Wow, that's hard on the old sit bones!
I averaged between 16 and 18 MPH. the pulse meter, which DOES work if you're sitting down, gave me an indicated 120-130 pulse.
Of course, this is on level 1 resistance.
Any suggestions as to how fast I should work up to before increasing resistance?

Jeanne was sick today, and didn't exercise (I wouldn't have either, stomache virous, need I say more?)

I don't know you and what you are trying to do and since I don't know exactly what you are using for equipment it is hard to say about your increase in resistance. What are you wanting to accomplish? Weight Loss, strength, better cardio, etc...

I would normally say that until you are at a longer time of your workout, not to increase your resistance, but the other thing you can do is to put in a few minutes of resistance during the middle of your workout. I do that in running by running at a 10:00/mile pace and then for one minute, I run at a 8:45/mile pace as an example.

Increase resistance if your goal is strength training. But know if you stress those muscles, they'll want more fuel. I would recommend, if weight loss is the goal, NOT to add resistance but increase time on equipment.

A one mile swim tonight at the YMCA. Now to get the bike racks out of the garage rafter to set up for the TrYathlon tomorrow morning. Yes, TRYathlon and not triathlon. This is a fun event to let people try the triathlon.

Adding resistance may not be building muscle mass, depending upon the amount of resistance. Building lean muscle and reducing fat is always a plus.

At some point I feel increasing speed will become superfluous, and an increase of resistance (like riding uphill or a higher gear on a real bike) will be a benefit, or possibly I'll just get to the point where higher speed just won't come.
Any of you who ride know that going downhill in first gear with your pedal rpm insufficient to actually add more speed is counter productive, so you shift up, making it harder to pedal but getting more distance out of each stroke.
I'm thinking at some point it'll get too easy and I'll need more resistance to achieve a training effect.
I asked for opinions because I thought there might be a better answer than when it feels too easy, and if there was I'm confident you guys would know it.

Anyway, no training today, per se, except a lot of work around the house.
I'll be glad when this crap's done, so we can get back on track with our exercise, and I can get some much needed auto and motorcycle repair done.

Did a triathlon this morning after setting up T1 for the race and then tearing it down after the race. Storming here, so another workout is out of the question.
