Price of Gasoline?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Jimbo » Sat Apr 16, 2005 11:51 pm

Here's the site I use to keep track of gas prices. http://www.flyingj.com/fuel/gasoline_CF.cfm. My job was about to end and I was looking in a 100 mile radius from home. Luckily, I found one only three miles from where I was working.
Started many, finished none... Bought a TTT <Sigh> ;)

But why not buy an economical VW?

The 3 Litre Lupo isn't named for its engine size (a 1.2 litre 3-cylinder diesel) but for its combined fuel consumption - 3 litre per 100 km. Its highway mileage is 85 mpg. That's US gallons - it sounds better in British gallons, 105 mpg.

The story from Yurp is that small diesels really do achieve something like their promised economy. By contrast, hybrids don't seem at all impressive, with real world consumptions figures not as good as a corresponding size diesel. But diesel hybrids are coming....

Andrew

Andrew,
I was checking some old posts and ran across this one from last March.
Quite impressive fuel mileage, but what really caught my eye was the background. It sure looks like the Bonneville Salt Flats, if so, that leads one to believe the 3 cyl. VW diesel is available in the US. Odd that the car has a european type license plate on it though. ;)

I like your little guy grilling hamburgers. I'd like to add that to the emoticons collection. Do you have any more goodies like that?

A bbq master once told me "if you flip your meat more than once it confuses the juices" I don't know if he is right but I only flip once, and my bbq is much better!

I'll flip burgers once and a steak only if needed, like if it cooks too fast.
I like to cook my steaks slow, so more smoke gets into the meat.
No comment on what MJ's flippin'.

I do the same, flip once and use tongs not forks. Its a little harder to do on a foreign grill though.

Kevin,

That photo was from VW Germany's web site. They've never sold the Lupo in the US - heck, they haven't even sold the next size up, the Polo, which is now as big as the Golf/Rabbit was when that was introduced.

I bet the car and the background started out in two different photos.....

Dean,

Never mind that one of them burgers is gettin' dizzy with being flipped so often, what about the other one - man, it must be burnt underneath by now....

I do see the smaller VWs here on occasion, I've also seen a Ford Ka. When I catch up to them, they usually have Mexico plates.

I've noticed gas doing the "creeping up" thing around here. Luckily the winter has been pretty warm and I'm able to ride my bike to and from work. It's not so "noble" since it's only 2 miles from home.

There is a large hill about 2 blocks from home that's great for flying down in the morning, not so hot on the way home. I'm using a 30+ year old racing bike originally with 10 speeds but now down to about 1 gear. Last time I walked the bike up the hill, an old geezer (about my age) asked me if I was taking my bike "for a walk". If I hadn't been so out of breath, I'd have probably given him a snappy answer.

I bought one of those electric bike kits as a birthday present but so far, haven't purchased a bike to put it on (I think it's too heavy for the racing bike).

Newp!
My meat sets about 20" above the coals....
I do flip my burgers once, but steaks only if I have to.
It usually takes at least an hour to do a steak that way, giving the smoke more time to flavor the meat.

Price of Gasoline

Postby rooster » Mon Jan 30, 2006 4:09 am

Just filled up today at $2.47 for Chevron, and its .25 cents cheaper per gallon in Anchorage. I feel it will be over $3.00 by 4th of July.

Jim, :x
