Dang it's hot!
:sweaty: :thumbs down:

My poor llamas are really suffering..................and I'm not doing so well myself. Will this darned heat ever let up, or has global warming moved in to stay? UGH!!!!!

Chris,

Anything you can do for a over-heated llama?

I know my kids are getting a little stir crazy being in the house. We have a heat index of 115 and I won't let them go to the park. I think it is only going to be 71 tomorrow, so I am figuring on a good storm tonight.

Hope you and the llamas get some relief soon.

Well, I shear them in the spring, which helps a lot. I've got 4 industrial fans in the barn to help, and they all stand in knee deep water troughs when they so desire...............only problem is when more desire to do so than space is available. Those who can't find room in line at the troughs let me water their legs. It's just too darned hot for animals more suited for the Alti Plano..........high altitude deserts of Peru. It freezes there every night. If it would just get down into the 50's every night they could catch up, but it's 80 degrees here by sun up and they just don't get a chance. It's been so hot and dry here this past spring and summer that we don't even have any hay to buy in our area. Farmers are selling their cattle because they can't feed them. I'm having to feed grain and that just heats the llamas up.

I can hardly tolerate it once the temps heat up above 70 degrees. I just hate it. Wish I could live somewhere where the temps stay between 50 and 70 year round. Is there such a place?

Chris,
we got the fans on the Llammas too. We hose ours down every day at least once. You should see how excited they get when they see us comming with that hose. Been going thru lots of feed for all our critters it is just too dry, there is nothing left to eat.

Frustrating, isn't it? I lost one back in early June to the heat and it wasn't even this hot yet. WHEW!!! Takes a long time to water down 15 llamas!!!!!

What about setting up some water mister hoses in the barn? If the misters aren't available try a standard hose, poke some holes into it the whole length and crank up the pressure. Would that work? I worked in a rabbitry where there was a thermostatically-controlled soaker on the roof. Cooling the roof made a big difference. Of course, around here we have a dry heat. 8)

Chris,

The North Coast of CA is very sparsely populated. Eureka probably has about 25,000 population, is 6 hours and nearly 300 miles away from San Francisco (you are closer to Dallas than that!) Once you are 2-3 hours north of SF its like you are in a different world. Get an hour north of Sacramento and it is nearly the same (except hotter cuz it's inland)

SHHhhhhhhhh....

Hey Guys,

The Canuck cold air front is on is way. We are getting BEAUTIFUL rain tonight about 1/2" an hour. Billion dollar rain for the farmers. The dewpoint is still in the 70's but the temp. about 80. The weather report say dewpoints in the 40's with a temp. high of 79 tomorrow. Thank God for the Canuck cold front. Major thunderstorms out ahead the cold front but sure starting to feel better. For for the rest of you guys still in the heat hang in there, only a few more days. My hogs are loving this!!!!

Well, there's a little relief in site... not much, but let's start the rain dance.
103* for Wed but then 94* for Thurs and 30% chance of rain.

BIG fire yesterday afternoon right in the middle of OKC , but yes mostly a field 120 acres and got the 15th hole of a nice golf course (Silverhorn) .
It's been windy the last couple o days too.

I make a motion we skip August. Do I hear a 2nd?

OOPS !!! NOOOO!!! I need to finish my teardrop before Labor Day!!!

Chris,
Thats what the temps were in Alaska. It was as close to perfect as it gets for temps. I wish I was there. I am trying to adapt a window A/C for TD use for N meets S this weekend. I really wished I was in Alaska today while under the TD in the shady garage. (It was only 97 degrees.)

We are going to be VERY testy (maybe tasty if the temps are high enough! LOL) wiith all this heat as we are going to be camping for a week on Friday in the tear. Do pray we get some weather relief! Otherwise we'll probably sleep on the ground outside the tear instead of sufficating.

Rob, misters work great for bare skin, like yours and mine. But go to your closet and put on your best wool overcoat and go stand in the spray of a mister. It's taken the llama industry, as a whole, a long time to realize it just doesn't work. But thanks for the suggestion............................and, by the way, just so you'll know I'm not talking from lack of experience...................I spent a fortune on an automatic mister system 12 years ago, so I know what I'm talking about.
