I have built two! I have an 8" Dobsonian which is built around a 10" diameter sonotube with base which was quite fun to build. I built it about 15 years ago. It works great and you can see lots of deep sky stuff. I built everything but the optics and the focuser. I also built a smaller 4 1/2" scope using a bowling ball. I saw one once in a magazine and had to see if I could build one. If you want I can take some pics and post them. It is not as hard to build one (a telescope) as one might think. But the prices have come down in the past 10-15 years that you can probably buy one just a cheap as build one. But it is fun to do. Good luck!
I cut it three times and it's still too short!!

Sweet!! If I ever do build one I probably will use the The San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers Plans here http://members.aol.com/sfsidewalk/cdobplans.htm

Hum... they have posted new plans from about 2 years ago... I haven't been through these yet.

Yes, Post some pic of your TS's. I'd love to see them, especially the bowling ball???

I have a 4.5" Reflector that I bought about 6 years ago, It's ok, but, I'm tired of just looking @ the mood, Jupiter & Mars oh and Saturn is Cool but way to small... I'd like to an 8" or 10"... BUT, I have to build my TD FIRST!!!

I went to a presentation by John Dobson. I have his video. He makes it seem easy, but making the lense is a lot of work. I havent made one yet, but a friend of mine has. He suggested I buy the optics and build the rest. Best of luck.

WOW, Mr Dobsonian himself, I'm Impressed .

Yes, the optics should be purchased, I just gave away a book on making mirrors. It was waaayyy to complicated for me... :?

Hummm  I'm Thinking a Teardrop portable observatory... kinda like Mikes Escape Hatch but with a turret?...maybe on my next build
