I'm at another moral crossroads...

Postby Ira » Tue Sep 12, 2006 10:27 am

First it was the Florida State Department of Highways, who for months, tempted me with a broken toll plaza. Since the flesh is weak, I did indeed sin time and time again for a free ride...much to the consternation of many here.

And also to the consternation of many, I am still a free man, and the toll has long been fixed. (Bastards.)

I now find myself in another situation with an even radically higher potential for significant financial savings in my massive portfolio:

I was in the process last week of cancelling my home telephone service, with the plan of just using our cell phones and switching my ISP to Cable Modem. (A lot of people are doing away with their home phones these days.) Anyway, my younger son is at the kitchen table with his laptop, not plugged in, which is the only way we could currently connect because I don't have a wireless router installed.

And lo and behold, he connects to a wireless network with a name that I won't reveal here, and the son of a gun is on the net looking at porn while my back is turned, like always. (Great kid.) My older son--same thing, but a different porn site.

They obviously connected to a neighbor's wireless network, but it could be one of several neighbors. This is obviously illegal, I have no intention at all of trying to access any files there or anything, but how bad is this really?

I welcome comments from those who take their religion in moderation.

legal issues....what you are proposing is a federal crime..."theft of services in interstate commerce"...there is not a lot of chance of getting caught and charged but that is the legal side

moral issues...stealing services from your neighbors ISP...stealing bandwidth from your neighbor, which can cause his D/L's to be slower...if you or your kids do domething illega,l such as rustling movie or music D/L's, your neighbor could get charged, since it is his IP address...setting a bad example for your kids by stealing (however you explain it)

Your neighbor is at fault, for not protecting his wireless access....
You are at fault for using it...
The dilemma of conscience is yours alone..............

Personally, I would have no problem using an open WiFi network, if I was not at home and looking for internet access for basic stuff(checking email...checking here) but not for general surfing or downloading...at home, I would get my own access and not have to deal with the legal/moral issues

my basic 2cents worth...

I'll go with the cable modem, because this doesn't feel right anyway. It's just weird that a wireless network can be that open to just anyone.

The 75 cents for the toll didn't bother me, but this did.

Maybe I'll find out who it is and see if they want to split the bill with me.

I agree that the chances of getting caught are pretty slim, but there is always the possibility that you can get caught. And since you are on HIS IP address, you could get him into hot water if there is any illegal downloading going on.

I'm not sure I could deal with my conscience, and don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those I'm better than thou people. I'd personally just have a hard time dealing.

Sorry, I was typing when you posted your second post.

Good for you. I think you are doing the right thing. Just letting the neighbor know that his connection is wide open, you will be doing him a favor.

Ira,

The idea that you even post this speaks volumes. Let's see, do you folks think I should steal bandwith from my neighbor so that my kid can surf porn for free. Hmmmm.

The stuff some folks will post on this forum never cease to amaze me......

Ed, some folks UNDERSTAND the jokes when they hear them.

My kids are 10 and 15 and don't surf for porn. Did you REALLY think I was serious here!? (Anyway, my 15-year-old is at the age where I'm going to have to look reality in the face anyway.)

Also, some people are so holier than thou that they SAY they do nothing wrong, but dollars to dougnuts, they're the worst offenders of all.

I'm just honest and open about these things, that's all.

The positives seemed to outweigh the negatives in that article, and the general tone was kind of, "Why not?"

I didn't know this was such a big happening thing nowadays.

Note to anyone running a wireless router in their house. It is best practice to set this up with at least MAC address security on the router. This means that only computers that you give the address to the router will be able to connect to it.

Yes this is a tad more work to setup, but no your neighbors will not (as easily) be able to connect to your router and borrow your internet bandwidth.

I imagine that anyone who wants to get serious about hacking can still connect, but it would be more than just turning on a WiFi labtop and saying connect to wireless !

Ira, in many areas they have "warchalkers" thse folks drive/walk around with a WiFi network detector (yep, a detector) and when they find an open network, will map it out and make special chalk marks on sidewalks and buildings, identfying the nework to other "'chalkers"

I don't know that it is. But I'm not surprised it's so popular in San Francisco. Makes sense if you think of it as a cyber commune!

Ira::)

I think the Golden Rule should be at play here.
How would you like someone taking your bandwidth
and maybe using it for ill purposes where you and
your family could be held responsible?

It is so true that some people don't get it! Leaving
their network on ramp open is so foolish. You
should know that your thoughts and every part of
your on line life is being watched or at least being
recorded. The on ramp to the net providers (ISP's)
will give you uP to the Government in a heart beat.
What hassles could be avoided if you just secure
what is yours. Would you leave your home open
to all the neighbors for long if you found them
stealing what is yours every day?

Here is a few links to ponder of other peoples thoughts:

How do you guys FIND these URLs so quickly anyway? If you or Joseph ever decide to run for office as a republican, I'm in trouble.

But Jack, why do the guys chalk the houses? So others can park in their cars and use those networks?
