That's a real shame. I have a regular lock on my coupler that prevents it from being opened to put on a hitch ball, but that can be gotten around if someone is determined to steal it. My TTT is beside my house, only accessible from the front, and much of the time, I park my truck in front of it. Then, the only way it could get stolen is if someone stole the truck too.

I'm considering buying a better hitch locking device like this one or maybe this one.

I wonder if it's one I sold last yr. to a gentleman in Ok. He took it home, left it in his driveway, with the title paperwork inside, and it was stolen while he was in the garage. The trailer was just a few feet away. tongue wt. is 60 lbs. Someone evidently just picked up the tongue and pulled it down the street, hooked it up and took off.
I don't think it was ever found.

I have the Master lock that Dale made a link to but found a nice trailer security combination package by Brinks at Walmart for $28. The package includes 2 heavy duty padlocks, a discus lock for the tongue, a hitch pin lock and a plug for the tongue socket. They are all keyed alike and I use them all. One padlock to the spare and the other I wrap the chains around the tongue wheel jack so even if they could lift the thing (approx. 300 lbs tongue weight) they couldn't swivel the wheel jack up to towing position because of the chains. Oh, did I mention, my tear has a permanent home in a locked garage. Someday when I have some spare money I'll get one of these Danny

I have smoothies and they are the only ones that will work for me @ $350. There is another one that will work for smoothies for $89 but it's too loose on a 15" wheel that someone still could drive away with little effort. :) Danny

Danny, with spoked wheels like I have, I'd think that a 4' length of hefty chain and a GOOD padlock would do the job. Just run the chain through the spoke hole, around the tire, and over the axle tube, secured with the lock. It sure wouldn't roll very far.

Dale, You could do as someone I knew did. He had several theft attempts on his sport car in the 80"s so he sunk a large eye bolt in the driveway and ran a chain over the axle. He was a machinist for Convair & must have welded the eye shut as it stopped the thieves. :) Danny

I have the same ball lock by Masterlock. I got the set that is keyed alike, it includes the ball lock, a coupler lock and the reciever lock. I'm pretty happy with it, I had to disconnect my trailer when we went to Disneyland and nobody messed with it.

This is where I got my Masterlock Keyed alike trailer lock kit

That looks like a nice set - I just ordered one
I like when things are keyed alike, it saves on junk I have to carry in my pocket!
When I built my frame I welded a couple loops to it so I can hook cables to it to lock it. The one in the back allows me to back it into a space and loop a cable around a lightpost. Makes it a little harder to move. I also have an electric tongue jack that is hard to operate if you don't have the manual handle if I remove power. I always use a flat plate instead of a wheel on it when I'm not in the shop so it can't be wheeled away as easily.

I use a old 2" ball that I cut the stem and threaded area off making it smooth across the bottom and then just lock it into the hitch. cost $0

Trouble with hitch locks is... I've seen boat trailers stolen where they just used the safety chains to tow it away. If they hook the chains up tight with the locked hitch sitting on the bumper, they can do it easy... Sad but true. :(

The problem with that (and I considered doing the same) is that the adjusting nut under the coupler can be loosened enough to let the ball drop, put the coupler on a hitch ball, and re-tighten the nut. Either of those locking devices I showed above prevent the ball from dropping out.

I have a rear bumper welded on that I could use to chain the TTT to a pole, but a pole may not always be close enough. Chaining the wheel to the axle so it can turn just part of one revolution is a sure way to keep it from moving.
